Ok so I installed a brand new MSI 5850 today, the main reason I bought it was to play GTA 4 and ArmA II.

ArmA II looks amazing but GTA 4 is so jumpy that it is virtually unplayable. Every other second the screen freezes for a moment and then continues.

I put the settings to auto detect and the problem persists, tried lowering the settings, same thing.

I'm using an AMD Phenom II 955 and 4gb OCZ Platinum RAM so I dont think this should be happening.

Any ideas ?

Yeah, got the latest catalyst version. I cant believe a 5850/955 combo cant get a playable performance even at very low settings, something must be wrong:confused:

Make sure you turn shadows down to at least medium, as they really kill performance. It's basically a really bad port, and you have to put up with some stuttering with just about any hardware.

Errr? It ran even (and looked) worse on the consoles, nothing to do with the port, more with the engine.

Turn traffic down to about 20 ish. Try lowering the shadows.

It was playable on my 8800gts and it's smooth on my gtx260 at 1920x1080... This with a quad @ 3.2 ghz.

I do have 6gb of ram though and during GTA IV, I see my ram usage go over 89% after a while of playing.

Big difference I noticed performance wise was the view/detail distances, even in the menu you can see your FPS creeping up as you lower them.

Poor performance maybe, but it shouldn't be stuttering... something is wrong if you're getting that.

It should be perfectly playable on medium to high settings with that sort of machine.
