So is there any mods that make GTA 4 run/look better, or is it just a badly coded, jaggy piece of poop?

Glad i only paid a fiver for it. I would be having so much fun if it didnt randomly slow down in places for no good reason and had some sort of Anti aliasing. mind you the performance would be probably be even worse then

Anyone got it running decently?

Yes on a lesser spec PC than you its always fine for me @ 1920x1080 on Q9450 + GTX260-216 @ stock with 4GB Ram.

Must be something else on your PC causing issues.

AA is not supported but if you hit the P key on your keyboard R* give you a blur filter to improve AA but obviously it makes the image slightly less sharp. Looks much better to me once you get used to it and a long way ahead of the console versions which are running at the equivalent of Low settings on the PC.

It is certainly not my pc. What settings do you use?

You can max most things out usually except:

Shadow density: Leave it at 0.
Traffic density: Drop to about 30-50 ish imo. When I had a dual core I used to have this on 2(out of 100) because this hits your cpu hard.
Draw distance: About 50 ish or less.

Afaik everything else like shadow quality, reflections, water, filtering, textures, detail distance can be maxed without much performance hit.

Used to run fine on my 8800GTS, but at 1280x1024.
Now at 1920x1080 it's fine with my gtx260-216.

Or download boris's mod and use supersampling, looks far better.

Tho if he's having low performance now I wouldn't advise it until he gets a better gpu.

There are some mods. I used a couple, I suggest you check the GTA modding sites. Sorry, I can't remember the name of the site. The mod is something like "Ultimate" something... It's very popular so It should be in the top rated/downloaded.

Pressing P for the blur filter looks horrible if you ask me.

I used the following settings. it's taken from the ingame benchmark.

Statistics
Average FPS: 52.13
Duration: 37.16 sec
CPU Usage: 79%
System memory usage: 68%
Video memory usage: 97%

Graphics Settings
Video Mode: 1440 x 900 (75 Hz)
Texture Quality: High
Texture Filter Quality: Very High
View Distance: 50
Detail Distance: 50

Hardware
Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate
Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate
Video Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260
Video Driver version: 195.62
Audio Adapter: Speakers (C-Media PCI Audio Device)
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q8300 @ 2.50GHz

It says average of 52 FPS but that's a bit misleading. I'd say you'd average about 30-35 with my hardware and settings.

Oh, Im overclocked to 3ghz, but it doesn't show it there.

CPU is a big factor.

I also recommend keeping the Vehicle density down. It's only the amount of cars to spawn, 30 setting is fine. Anymore and it's annoying anyway. It adds a lot of strain.

For the record, I haven't even completed this game. No where near as good as the others. It's a shame!

Stick me in the "Glad I only paid a fiver" camp too.

Not so much for the poor performance - with a dual core and 8800GTX, I knew I'd have to drop down the eye-candy - but for the double whammy of 'Games For Windows Live' and 'Rockstar Social Club' signup requirements. On top of Steam? **** that.

Yeah - my fault: Should have read the specs, etc etc. But what with this and Burnout Paradise's similar trick, I'm starting to think that the whole "PC gaming is dying!" brigade may have a point :( I bought a game to play - don't put bloody hurdles up every time I hit the launch button!

Sorry. Not entirely relevant, but I had to vent and I have no friends :p.

It's not a great engine to begin with and on top of that it wears the crown as the worst pc port in history. It runs and looks like ****e, no matter what your rig.

Runs well and looked pretty good on my rig. Would like a damn sight better with AA, but its not the end of the world.

"Worst PC port in history" is nonsense. You can get the same performance as the consoles got on an average PC. The problem is PC owners thinking they should be able to ramp everything up to full quality settings on their dual cores and still have it run smooth as can be at 60fps.

Use boris's mod then for aa dudes  :

My housemate bought this 2 days BEFORE the £5 sale, even at 1024x768 on his rig using the built in benchmark he only averages 15fps, this thing is a worse port than Saints Row 2 and nowhere near as fun.

I disagree, GTA IV ran far better than SR2 on my previous spec, SR2 is a far worse port as it somehow needs 4x the gpu power than it needs on consoles, whereas GTA IV runs fine ( as in playable, like on consoles, 30 ish fps) on a spec more or less equal to consoles ( tri core and ati 1900ish ) on the same settings as on consoles.

I needed to upgrade from an 8800GTS to a GTX260 to get a more decent framerate on SR2, odd, because it manages fine on a crappy 1800xt and 7900GT... Hell, it didn't even support WS in v1.0, and after the patch ( after two in fact), it still only supported 16:10 and not 16:9. The sound is very low quality and noticeable on anything better than rubbish tv speakers. SR2 is probably the worst port in the whole decade. The graphics look worse than in GTA Vice city yet it runs far worse on specs far superior to consoles.

Gameplay wise, I found it a bit repeative, problem is the driving about is not enjoyable in SR2 due to the handling and pop-up, I ended up only doing them challenges so I could do the missions, while in GTA Iv i love just driving around.

Max everything except for Texture quality is set to Medium as you need a 1.5GB VRam gfx card to have highest apparently!! It must be either something on your PC or you have texture quality set to highest.

Edited to say: By max everything I mean exactly that all settings to 100 only Textures are set to medium. Console versions are running @ sub 720P resolutions then upscaled to 720P as their dated hardware cannot even run this game as intended only the PC can & even then you need a quad core or higher as well as a reasonable mid range or higher gfx card. If you look at how bad this game looks on consoles, the screen tearing, the constant texture popin & popup sometimes from a few feet away, the poor FPS, lack of detail etc etc & you will know 100% for sure the PC is the ultimate version by a long way. The game is no Crysis but can look very good in many places especially considering the scale of the city & how much you can do within it. With only 4Gb Ram the entire city is pretty much all in memory provided your PC is not doing anything stupid in the background (like running an AV scan!)

edit - I did search for 'boris's mod' but all Google gave me that was relevant was your post in this thread.

I play it with most settings on medium or high at 5040x 1050 res, and average around 40fps. I wouldnt say its badly coded..

Try enb or enbseries mod in google :)

hmmm

Got that, tried it, slideshow.

It seems to do all sorts of other stuff to the graphics too, is there a foolproof guide to purely how to turn the AA on?

Screenshots show it looking the same but with AA, when I loaded it up all the lighting and reflections and stuff had been altered too.

Load up the config file that came with the dll in the rar archive... Disable everything but aa...
EDIT: Or alternatively, you could download the old AA version '' AA test'' that only has the AA in but iirc that version only worked windowed.
I'm not exactly sure how but I'm pretty sure you can just use aa alone and not use any of the other effects with the new version.

As for slideshow, do not attempt to run this if your performance was already low, and lower your actual ( not the supersampled result) resolution a bit...

EDIT2:
[EFFECT]
UseOriginalPostProcessing=false if enabled, original game post processing is activated

EDIT3:
So making
EnableBloom=true
EnableAmbientOcclusion=false
EnableSkyLighting=true
UseOriginalPostProcessing=false
everything false should do it.

Ok i am probably expecting too much then.

I mean im avg about 40 fps with everything maxed, shadows at 4, details at 50 and draw at about 35. there are some dodgy bits where it lags a bit though. I guess it isnt going to be one of those games that runs at a nice smooth 60.

Ah well.

What did you expect to be honest ? It can barely manage 30 average fps on both consoles, and that is at a lower resolution, far lower traffic and draw distance settings, and non existence of the ''shadow density'' setting which kills performance on pc if turned on but it doesn't exist in the console version. I mean yeah a gtx275 is faster, not that much faster that you can put a load on it that is four or more times higher and expect higher fps.
