Currently waiting for Mafia 2 and in my boredom am wondering if GTA4 is worth it - I've heard a lot of negatives, not only about performance but gameplay too.

GTA 4 is one of the best games I've ever played. So good, I've now clocked it about five times and now playing it through for the sixth time.

Runs absolutely perfectly for me at max settings. But a lot of people still do have complaints about performance.

It should also run great on your rig. I have a Q6600 @ 3.55Ghz and an ATI 4890.

TBH, i've much preferred the episodes to GTA IV, Ballad of Gay Tony has that typical GTA fun factor that the whole depressing eastern european immigrant GTA storyline lacked somewhat.

It's still worth a play, particularly now that it can be had for under a tenner. It is a performance hog but pay no attention to the fact that you're not playing on high and there's a good game there.

I had it on my PS3 and ended up trading it in.

They've removed a lot of the side games and it's much more linear than San Andreas or Vice City.

The core gameplay is the same as ever though if that's all you're after.

The only real reason everyone on PC moaned about it (me included) was the awful performance, the actual game a really, really enjoyed, not as stupid as the old GTAs but the world is as rich and detailed as you could want.

^^^ Oh yeah and TFLC was daaaamn good, payed £20 for it and don't regret a penny.

I think San Andreas was more fun and a better game (huge game area, diverse locations etc), but GTA4 is one you still can't miss I think. The Rockstar GTA humour is still there, the plot is good, characters are vibrant and detailed. The only downside, and the reason why it gets so much flak, is that the performance (on both consoles and PC) was poor. You need a decent quad core CPU to run it as smoothly as you may play your other games. Saying that, I completed it on a Core 2 Duo E6750 and a Geforce 8800GTS 320mb (!!), so it's not the end of the world, and I still enjoyed it. However, after getting a Q6600 and GTX280, it was even more enjoyable.

Well you have a quad CPU and a good graphics card so you should be ok but you won't be able to max it out. GTA4 is really good. The worst thing about it for me was that it's 99% wall-to-wall city, it all looks the same. In GTA:SA it feels like you can just take off anywhere. In minutes you can be in the desert or in the hillbilly towns etc. I've finshed GTA4 twice and just finished TLAD. I still couldn't drive around the whole city without a map. At times I would stuggle to tell you which island I'm on.

I can run it max on the rig below but with a 5830 @ stock, its smooth as anything @ 1680x1050, just had some fps issues on some boat mission for some reason.. but apart from that :D

I would recommend GTA4 for the back story and then the lost and damned for a little bit more back story and then The ballad of gay Tony as the main story that links the other two and is utterly awesome!

Yes.

However, you do need a fairly decent PC to run it smoothly.

It was running "OK" at 1920x1080 on my Q6600 @ 3.0GHz and a 512mb 8800GT with 6GB RAM.
