GTA IV - any tweaks to force it to use system RAM?

Patch 5 or v1.0.4.0 is regarded as the best performing iirc. Plus it's the best version to use with some of the ENB Series visual mods, like this :

Or this one that works will all versions of GTA IV afaik :

dpeasant3's mod looks prettier, but is not quite as straightforward to get up & running as DKTronic's mod & will impact your fps.

Versions from 1.6 onwards changed the shadowing method so they look prettier / smoother & use less vram, but they cause a noticeable performance hit.

@ MoodyB - thanks I didnt know about that DKTronic viz mod will check it out!

Has nobody else with the ATI stutter tried resetting CCC to defaults yet?

Hmm I didnt even think of playing with CCC, will have a look at that and see if it makes a diff.

While this thread is up, can anyone point me in the direction of how to restore my saves to a win7 steam install. gta4 ran so slow on a dual core I gave up but have i7 now and would be good to pick up where I left off.

Is there a no hassle way to copy the saves over, think I did it once long ago

12gb should be used as texture memory which is non card based graphics memory. Otherwise put the game on a ramdrive maybe

developed on PCs

on PCs for the powerpc architecture but not for windows as consoles dont have a full os. All the extra bumpf clogs things up, I guess its running some interpretation of the code in realtime hence more core use

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Rockstar Games

Also back up the Rockstar Games folder in your Documents, as that contains your mp3s, benchmarks and other settings :)

Oh and remember its tied to your Windows Live games account so make sure you log into that otherwise it seems to ignore the saves..
EDIT: This page is very useful, http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=840657 :) I recall theres also a little app that scans and backs up all your save games into .exe's that when double clicked will extract to the correct locations.
Another EDIT: Heres that little app (http://sourceforge.net/projects/savegamebackup/) and the Steam thread for it (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=853764)

Hope that helps

system ram isnt anywhere near fast enough to be used as a logical extention of the gpu ram

12gb of ram? i would have put that money towards a better gpu maybe, its certinaly not needed for a gaming pc.

thats not related to gpu ram or a lack of. is your game up to date and running the latest patch? i have a 5850 and i can set everything as high as it will go, for what it's worth.

hmmm not convinced by this I couldnt do this on my 5870 and still cant on my 2gb 6970. every slider maxed and a 5970 stuggles

Just put this to the test but with 1920x1080 res instead. Computer is a i5 sandybridge cpu at 4ghz, 580gtx at stock (1.5gb one) and 8gb 1600MHZ ddr3 ram. Installed the game on my raid 0 array as thats where all my games go on this machine (OS is on a crucial M4 SSD) and upon loading the game up, put everything to very high and all sliders to 100 and was surprised by the results. The amount of video card RAM the game wants (which it tells you in the options) was around 1300mb and it ran flawlessly at these settings.

Quite impressed as my last computer couldn't run it that well without some serious tweaking.
I know it looks pretty good now right :D Try flying above the city though it stills stutters a little but considering the amount of detail its to be expected really.

Also hit the P key on the keyboard it introduces a blur filter which is the pseudo AA setting you can force AA but it takes a lot more GPU power at least SLI GTX480 or higher!
