For the best part of 3 days I have been trying to jump into this game for a wee play, so far I still haven't had a go.

Installed in steam twice now, nice simple and clean :)

Social Club, I just pap as play off line... all good so far. (This is the best case scenario, never used to be as straight forward as this)

Into game, must sign into live... ok done! Get to first safe house and something about live needing updated and cant save till I update. Need to come out the game.

Live all updated and it still said it wasn't up to date. So still couldn't save.

Update or download a new live in windows, nice new black gui, so I think that's it... so i sign into that before I try the game. Get in the game and I still need to sign into live, so I try but it wont accept keyboard input!!

Game now tends to crash if i try come out of live sign in or tell it just not to save.

Now I cant get into the game at all, no matter what I do it crashes (well more like stops responding) before even the initial cutscreen.

Bejenkies. Seriously.

Is this how things are these days? :(

No its now things are, its just that GFWL is the worst software known to man, I regularly encounter problems with GFWL games myself and I think you'd be the exception to the norm if you've never had problems with games using it.

Tried killing all the Windows Live stuff in Task Manager, then starting GTA IV?

Only had a problem once, this fixed it.

Another option is to sign in to the GFWL client before launching the game. Once I did this, the client through GTAIV seemed to be able to sign in automatically.

(Not counting the weeks it took for xboxlive support to unlock my GFWL login...)

This happens sometimes when modding it dude.. Have you installed anything extra?
To get it to work with mods it's a bit of a faff cos you need to install additional dlls

You know, I don't condone this, but sometimes it's just less hassle to pirate a game than it is wrestling for HOURS with the dastardly thing. Bioshock 2 comes to mind. I cannot begin to describe my pain in getting it to work with that flaming piece of **** GFWL. I spend literally hours struggling to get GFWL to work and in the end I gave up and grabbed it from torrents. Copied the crack over and I was off and away.

It's sad really that pirates offer a better service than idiotic game makers.

Sorry, can't help with GTA. I do however remember that it wasn't exactly easy for myself either to get it to work.

I've never had any trouble with many games using GFWL thankfully. I forgot to backup my GTA IV save before I reinstalled Windows 7 so had to start again :(

Just started to play GTA IV recently but I modded it first.

When running a modded version you need to disable xlive, if its causing you a problem you could do the same thing.

The mod to do this is basically a modified xlive.dll file which you put in the main directory (look for mod xliveless) its moves your saves to a different directory too (you can either move your saves to this directory so they work, or start from scratch).

Has worked for me so far, and thats with several mods on it, inc better city textures and a few cars.

I've had trouble with gfwl before. I think my anti virus was stopping it from running properly (I was using COMODO and I still am). It turned out that I had to uninstall COMODO to get gfwl to run properly. Even turning the anti virus off didn't work for some reason, which is ridiculous.

In the end, uninstalling COMODO worked, and I had no problems with gfwl. However, this was unacceptable that I had to do this.

You can run the game with a command line of "-norestrictions" which stop that i think.

About the mods, I have none yet... saying that, it is one of the reasons I have recently installed it, I like the look of some of them!

But right now its just the basic game I want working, then was going to move on to the mods!

I can see why people don't like the GFWL thingy, its terrible and even just on the desktop when i sign in it takes forever...!

It seems so counter productive to have steam running, gfwl, social club and then the gfwl in game client. No wonder people used to complain about its performance.

I'll look into the xliveless thing now, I'm not bothered about online and achievements as i have it on the 360 :)

Still don't really see me getting anywhere!

If you do manage to get everything sorted the latest patch doesn't require the social club.
