Hi Guys, have just purchased GTA IV and straight off the bat am noticing a stuttering problem, have had a nose on google and most people suggest running a defrag, only thing is I have an SSD and from what I remember reading you don't defrag an SSD...

Anyone got a clue how to resolve this, specs are in my sig...

Also I've dropped the settings to medium and low and still same problem

Are you running SLI? I checked your sig, dont think you are.
Are you running GTA4 standard or have you installed an ENB for it? (a mod to improve graphics)
Have you checked any programs running in the background when playing, eg, games recording apps like Fraps or Afterburner. Try disabling your anti virus. These could cause stuttering.

No SLI I'm not that posh.... I'm running the game in Vanilla, will try disabling anti virus...... don't have programs like fraps or afterburner

Patch it to the latest version ignore the above, I was able to run it near max settings on a single 460.

Runs perfect for me as well, it is an odd ball though. People with high end and low end machines can either play it well or they can't, seems to be no real logic behind the performance.

I'm sorry, what? Ok, I'm on a 670 GTX FTW, 8gb ram, 3rd gen i5 at 4.

Give me 2 seconds, let me just see what fraps says at MEDIUM settings.

Edit: 47 was an average

Honestly, i5 2500k @ Stock, 8GB RAM and a single 460 on the latest patch meant I could play it near max settings at a smooth rate with LCPDFR, ELS etc.

Have you tried to turn of clip capture? It is on my default and can can issues on some setups.

This is usually the answer!

I found this ran better on Nvidia cards as well. Losing clip capture stops it recording everything though.

Can you move the install to a mechanical drive? (Steam Mover or something should help!)

You shouldnt be experiencing stuttering. GTA IV should be a piece of cake to run. I used to play it on quite high settings with a Core 2 Duo and an 8800GTS G80.

No it really is a weird one. Like I said people with high end and low end machines can run it perfect then many many can't. It is a weird game, but as said above clip capture normally is the fix for most.

Done everything as suggested and still stuttering, I don't have a mechanical drive to transfer it over too.... ah well its not totally unplayable just irritating!

You need a little more than 1.3-1.4GB VRam & HT Enabled on your CPU otherwise backoff the GPU settings (this is @ 1920x1200 any higher needs obviously much more VRam)..
