GTA IV Unlock Problem

Trying to install GTA IV from the original DVD.

Online Activation gets to 30% then fails requiring manual activation. (Known issue judging by the results from Google). Visited the Securom site to get the unlock code but clicking on "Activate Manually" spins the mouse cursor for a few seconds then nothing happens.

Can anyone help with a solution to get round this (that doesn't involve cracks or illegal files etc.). I've tried disabling virus checker and updated firewall with GTA IV but all to no avail.

Cheers.

Still using Win 7 on the main PC (waiting my turn in the queue from M$).

Quite why Rockstar still need all this copy protection anyway on a seven year old game boggles the mind.

I would just repurchase the Steam version but during my research seems that has identical problems.

does it still require a games for windows live account to be installed?

I seem to remember having to install it before my steam version would work and then create a offline profile....

You can dll xliveless with negates the need for Windows Live.

Not sure if that would solves OPs issue though.

Thanks for the links but already scrutinised those pages. The problem is, that the manual activation box worked initially to generate the code on their site, but now refuses to run.

Have now emailed Securom support to see if they can help.

And why does a seven year old game bought new on disc in 2008 still need a "release date" check anyway?!

Because it still uses 3 lame DRM schemes still (4 if you bought from Steam!!).(GFWL, RSC, Securom) ensure all are up to date as RSC has been updated several times as well since 2008 the DVD is well out of date.

1: Ensure GFWL is up to date. Go here update the GFWL client its been update last year you must use this version or it will fail to run anyway:
http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/Live/PC/DownloadClient

2: Ensure your firewall ports are open for GFWL:

UDP + TCP 443 for product activation as per this R* doc.
