GTA San Andreas Controller Question

It's been four long years since I last guided CJ from down and out in the hood to hero and multi millionaire. Pleasantly surprised to find the game still starts and runs under Win7.

However... I want to use KBM on foot and my Xbox 360 controller for vehicles. I've also got a Thrustmaster Flight Stick plugged into the PC as well as the XB360 controller. Unfortunately, GTA SA is finding the flightstick and not the XB360 pad, which is pretty much useless for playing the game.

I've checked the options and can't see any way of changing which controller the game uses. I don't really want to unplug the Flight Stick as I'm also doing some flight simming at the moment.

Does anyone know of a fix or how I can force GTA to see the XB360 as the primary controller and not the joystick?

No joy with that utility - couldn't get it to run, even after ensuring I had VB6 installed.

Oh well, guess it will be old fashioned (un)plug and play for the joystick after all!

Have you tried setting the preferred controller in the Windows USB Game Controllers panel?

In Win 7 search for "USB Game", click advanced and then select the one you want to use.

Tried that, no joy, so have just unplugged the joystick at which point SA recognised the joypad and away we go. Easy enough to plug the stick back in the front USB port, when the Level D 767 et al beckon.

I still rate GTA SA as one of the best games ever - so much to do and even then still not get 100% completion. Some of the missions are extremely challenging, even early on (the bouncing car contest, chasing the train on the motorbike etc.), but some of the later ones are so incedibly fun - Catalina, the Black Ops, vigilante in the tank...

Just glad it still works on Win 7 unlike Vice City. Plan will be to play through SA, then GTA IV (and its add on pack) by which time if the rumours in the other thread are true, GTA V may be with us on the PC (for a Xmas present).

All the GTA's work on win 8.1 so they must work on win 7 as well. I was playing Vice City a few days ago on 8.1 without issues.

Learn to drive/fly with the keyboard. So utterly simple and needs no extra messing around!

And yes that's how I play, dancing and bouncing included. Never failed those missions, neither has my 65 year old dad with the keyboard :p

More a case that Vice City seemed to run at a lightning speed (similar thing happens with Saints Row 2 though there was an unofficial fix for that). Disc went to a jumble sale a while ago anyway so VC not a huge issue, but glad some people are able to run it.

Even SA is looking a bit dated I have to say after an hour or two last night, but still worth pushing through one more time.

Oh maybe the steam version has a patch that was not released for retail disc. If you see the collection in a sale for £2-£3 pick them all up and they should just work, even the very first ones work. Saints Row 2 steam version also has no speed issues well none that I have seen.

This is meant to make VC look better, although not tried it yet:

Pretty sure SA has texture mods somewhere.
