Is it possible to fly the plane using pc controls as I have tried about 40 times now to try and fly through the many many red rings at flying school but the controls are way to sensitive ,do you have to do this mission to complete the game ?

pretty sure you do as that unlocks new missions if i remember well , just get a cheapish gamepad its much better to play on pad and when you need to sharp shoot just grab a mouse and keyboard ;) that way you get the best of both worlds :D

you need to attain bronze in each test if i recall correctly. are your controls set as default? changing them may make it easier. i almost uninstalled the game i got that frustrated with it but it is dooable on the keyboard. one you get the hang of it it will be ok.

problem is I can't get the hang of it :D

Have changed the settings think I will have to get a game pad !

Seems a bit silly though that a pc game resorts to having to get a game pad may as well just buy a console !

to be fair it is a console designed game

I used the xbox360 pad. Once you get your pilots license you can enter any airport, get into a plane, and take-off/fly to pretty much anywhere you want :D

I used a Dualshock 2 since thats what i completed all the GTA's since 3 on. If you get gold on ALL the flying lessons you get a Hunter at the airfield (Apache attack helicopter). :D

i found it dead easy using the keyboard. :p

i've got a 360 controller but haven't even tried to play gta with it. i just love my keyboard/mouse too much. :D

Dead easy, bit harder than lets say Battlefield 1942 but easely to get used to.
I never understood why people had trouble with flight school, I passed all missions on the first go there. Just never press things but always tap.

I'm using this too (wired) but the game doesn't seem to recognise the trigger buttons. I'm also struggling to be able to move the camera around. How can I get GTA:SA (better than Vice City btw :p) to recognise all the functions of the XBox controller?

You must pass Flying School to continue the game. And if you're struggling on that, you'll find the Freefall mission a bit later on almost impossible. (GTA equivalent of Kurosawa 2 from Wing Commander 1). I actually had to modify the aircraft config a bit to get past that one. At least WC1 had an alternative path you could follow to stay in the game, but GTA like most recent titles is strictly linear and doesn't allow that.

I definitely recommend using an XBox controller, the analogue sticks give a slightly finer control than the digital "on off" of the keyboard.

Also try switching to first person view as that can overcome the tendency to pitch up in exterior view. The "loop the loop" is almost impossible to do in third person.

ISTR reading somewhere lowering the frame rate can improve control for these missions.

Did all of the flying missions with mouse and keys. The harrier mission took a few tries but Zero's rc biplane and copter missions were a real pain, must have taken a combined fifty attempts!
