I thought I would post this on here as well as the GTA forums so please excuse the copy and paste. Any idea,s or advice would be great.

I picked GTA4 up on thursday evening at my local Morrisons for the princely sum of £9.99, I had decided to give it a couple of patches before buying, as there seemed to be some issue,s at launch. But I have been having a absolute nightmare with this game and normally I could fix it myself or google my problems away.

My spec,s are as below.

Dual boot:
Vista 64 ultimate SP1 fully upto date.
XP Pro 32bit SP3 fully upto date.
DirectX upto date.
Ati drivers tried 8.12,8.12HF,9.1 on both OS'es
[email protected], 8 hours Prime 95 multi core stable since sept/07
ATI HD4870 512mb stock clocks
4gb corsair xms8500c5
WD RaptorX150gb+ Seagate 7200.11 500gb
Samsung DVD drives

GTA4 Retail copy+latest patch via GFWL

Vista 64 install

So my problems started pretty much straight away, after installing the game I headed into the menu system only to be met with my first hard lockup, whilst browsing the graffix options.
Restarted and went back in and changed the resolution to 1680x1050, aspect ratio to 16-10 60hz and let the game auto configure the rest. Memory usage was 436 out of a reported 499, not quite sure what happened to the other 13mb.
Start the game up and during the first cut scene the game locked up, restarted and was able to get to my cousins house before my next lock up, this time with some graphical issue,s.
Decided to roll back to 8.12 as I had been using 9.1 upto now, this has made no differance, I am still getting these constant lockups. The longest I have been able to play is about 30 mins before another lockup. Tried the 8.12HF drivers and as above no differance. Re-installed the game and let GFWL install the patch etc and still no difference, now every time it is a hard lock, I can do nothing but force a restart on the pc. I have also tried the no-disc exe listed on this forum, but alas this has not helped either and only allowed me to leave the disc in the box.

XP Pro SP3 install

So my next thought was this may be a Vista or 64 bit related problem, so I installed on to my XP 32 bit drive, only to be met with exactly the same type of hard lockups as above. This was with any of the latest Cat drivers.

I have had no issue's with any other game like this before, my PC has been rock stable since being built in sept 2007 with the only change being the HD4870 replacing my 8800GTX in august last year. All the other games that I play(Crysis/Crysis Warhead/COD4/Bioshock/L4D/BF2142/Mirrors Edge/Fallout3/Farcry2/GOW/COH/C&C3) do not cause any hard lockups, only the very rare CTD. If any one here can give me any pointers as of what to do/try next, other than throwing it in the bin, that would be great.

Running sweet as on mine using a 8800GTX, which at the time of development was probably the card, (rest of spec in sig and btw urs is fail it cuts off)

Maybe you should scrap the dual boot as in my experiences its been a tad beef.

Juts a heads up, this game can often hard lock after extended play if you have the gfx card memory usage in the 'yellow' zone let alone red, your in the green i assume so should be fine. Also I have to ramp 280 fan up, as for some reason this game makes my card run very hot compared to others...

Great to know it is running fine on yours, alas not a lot of help to me!

Lovely grammer and pray tell why mine is fail?

There must be countless people who dual boot and this is not the problem, wtf is a "tad beef"

Please if you have nothing benefical to say, just abstain!

Yes I am in the green, although I will try lowering every thing down even lower.
Grfx card is under EK water block temps never over 40c so temperature should not be a issue.

I'd run some stability tests on the system if you haven't dont so recently to confirm that the hardware's fine. Try a few iterations of 3DMark.

I know you say your system is stable on your other games, but have you just tried running GTA with your cpu/gfx card at stock? At the very least, just spending 10 minutes giving that a try will at least rule out any oc problems.

I've managed to get my CPU at 3.8ghz and have it launch a few games ok, yet as soon as I loaded Prime95, the system instantly rebooted. Just because a system is stable in some games/apps, doesn't mean it is in all of them.

In my 1st post I stated that it has been 8hrs stable P95 multi core version since sept 2007, it does not crash or blue screen until I started trying to play this game. True I have not run P95 since probably last summer when I did 3.825 @1.508 stable for 8hrs, but then I dropped back to 3.6 as I never really saw any benefit. But I will run P95 for a 1hr or 2. But I do not think this is the problem as I said before it can lock up in the menu, when cpu load is less 20% across all 4 cores, therefore this would lead me to say it is not system stress and more likley to be something more related to ATI drivers.

Your sig is to big to fit in the allowed allocated space, thus the last line cuts off, check the sig rules! something like a 4 line rule.

You asked for pointers so I gave you one, if dual boot is not a problem and you know this, why do you see it as relevance to the problem at hand?

"Tad beef" means not very good!

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=tad
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=u got beef?

The English language evolves, I'm sorry if you can't keep up with it.

O and its "Grammar" not "Grammer". :)

Have you tried the commandline options? There are several that might help -nomemrestrict or even -memrestrict xxxxxx to set a limit. Could be the memory bug after all.

This thread has lots of useful information, well worth a read and trying some things.

I know what your problem is and i can help ya sort it out :) I had the exact same problem as you did. Can you tell me the BIOS date you have on your card? The date can be found in CCC under information center and then graphics hardware.

There you go,I am sensing a flash being advised :)

Yer u sensed right :) Sapphire are aware of this problem and released an updated BIOS on their website. I got hold of this fix for it and i havn't had one crash so far after flasjing with the new BIOS.

1. Download the following file - http://rapidshare.com/files/192095034/Fix.rar
2. Extract the contents.
3. Disable UAC in Vista (http://www.petri.co.il/disable_uac_in_windows_vista.htm) have to do this because Vista wont allow you to run batch files.
4. Open the extracted folder and run the "Flash.bat" file. Should be at the bottom on the list in the folder.
5. Wait for it to do it's stuff. Can take upto 2 minutes. (Make sure you don't restart or turn of your computer whilst flashing is in progress)
6. Wait for the progress bar to finish.
7. When prompted restart your machine and everything should be ok.

*Do this at your own risk, I take no responsability if anything goes wrong. (It shouldn't :p)

That is all it worked for me and haven't had one freeze up in any game since.

Flash has gone well, re-installed 9.1s and 20 mins of game play at auto configuration and you may have hit the nail on the head. Going out tonight, so with tomorrow being rather grey and cold will try for longer, but looking promising so far, will update you tomorrow.

I would have to say this has worked, I just played for 1hr with no issue's what so ever and 30mins with my HD4870's clocks at 840/1100 again no issue's. Any chance you have a link to where you first came across the information regarding the flash?
