60 quid to spend and not a penny more. and i really mean that. :D

i'm guessing a 2nd hand 8800gtx would be my best bet? i'm on a CRT monitor so don't mind playing @ 1024x768. or would i be better off getting just an 8800gt as i see these going for around 45 sheets on the MM. would there be any difference between the 2 at the res i'm playing? money is tight so even an extra 15 quid saved will improve my quality of life for the next 2 weeks. :p

8800GTX second hand would probably be the best bet, the more video memory the better for GTA IV. Should be able to run it on a slightly higher res than that too, depending on your CPU?

At that resolution i'm sure you could even go for a 9600GT as others have said above. That game is hilariously CPU bound from my experience. What is the CPU you are running it on? If its a dual core you may need to overclock it to raise the framerates.

i'll only be getting a low end c2d/pentium dual core. i already have a s775 board left over from when i had a decent-ish pc last year (had to sell the rest because i was skint :p). obviously i'll be looking to clock the knackers off whatever i get. but that may only be around 3ghz (going on past experience :o). hopefully, because of the low res i'm going to play at, not having a quad core isn't going to hurt me too much. :p

If you get a e5200 you should hit 3.6ghz without any trouble, from experience. I seem to remember all I did was change FSB and multiplier and adjust vcore very slighty. and ram voltage (to get ram running properly) and rebooted.

To get any higher i had to adjust voltages and set the ram timings manually :)

yeah, i think an e5200 will be my best bet. i was thinking of trying to score a 2nd hand e21xx (which i only got to 3ghz last time i had one). at least getting an e5200, i know they're good for at least 3.5 unless you're seriously unlucky. just means i'll have to wait a few weeks as i can't afford one right now.

i've just scored myself a 512mb GTS for 50 sheets on the MM so i'm hoping that will do for the GFX. :)

Until recently I was running GTA4 on a 3GHz E2180 and 8800GT. With the 1.0.3 patch things improved quite a bit. I also noticed that going from 1300x900 ish up to 1920x1200 only made 1 or 2 fps difference. Definitely CPU limited.

Now have an i7 and the improvement is massive. If you go with an 8800GT I'd recommend setting the detail distance to 80 or so but keeping the draw distance low (2 or 3) This to me looks better and runs smoother. Keep textures to medium so you don't go over the cards 512MB RAM and it is very playable IMO.
