I'm having trouble playing GTAV, my fps isn't consistent it's drops in places and it's becoming annoying. Outside Trevors place is a one such problem area

If I drive a bit further down the road I get

I have a [email protected], 64GB ram 2400mhz, 970GTX stock, 850w corsair PSU.

As you can see the D3D frametime in the low FPS first shot is 42ms, and in the 60fps screenshot 15.9ms.

I've formatted, though I could try again with just w10 and GTA on the SSD nothing else, but I was having these issues before formattinng hence the format to try and fix them.

There's not much running in the background to interfere and you can see in the screen shot in the slow 30fps one my comp->

GPU useage @ 56%, power draw @ 61%, temp 69C
GPU memory useage 2468MB, so a GB under potential 970 0.5GB memory stutters
CPU useage @ 32%, system memory useage 5.6GB.

I've set the 970's power to maximum performance but it's hardly being taxed as it is and hasn't made a difference vs adaptive. I've lowered setting and things but it's not helping.

I'm a bit stumped as to what is happening, sorry if this is in the wrong forum section, or if I have messed up the pictures or anything, thank you for looking and for any help, have a nice day :)

GTAV is not modded, normally I run with nearly everything on very high, except grass. However since the problems I have set textures to high, and lowered shadow options and reflections, and I use 2x msaa with MFAA set in nvidia control panel. But as you can see in the screen shots the gfx card is not being taxed either GPU useage wise or the memory useage like 2.6GB.

What about advanced options?

I've had this happen to me. I think the in-game vsync is bugged.

Alt-tabbing out and back in again fixes it and then it is fine for the rest of the game session. That's my experience anyway.

The thought hadn't occurred to me that it might be the VSync bug! I recall having to tab out on occasion with GTA Online when I had my GTX 970, which often settled the frame rate.

I'm pleased you've got it sorted!

Glad it worked, though its a shame you had already gone through the rigmarole of formatting! Sometimes the simplest solutions are also the most annoying as you've already spent hours trying other time consuming potential solutions.

Hey I couldn't help buy notice your user name. Do you know if they ever managed to fix Psychonauts on AMD video cards? On some of the latter stages the video cards were running out of memory and the game become a stuttering mess.

Windows is on it's own SSD, unplug other SSD's and HDD's and format and reinstall, doesn't take more than what an hour or 2. I also reapplied TIM to my gfx card and it's lowered the idles temps a bit, load temps are the same though. It's all messing with computers which I love so not a second wasted imo :)

@Freddie1980 I'm afraid I don't know! I've never actually owned the game on PC. I should probably buy it and find out - don't mind playing though such a unique, entertaining game again.

I've looked though the steam discussions and though there's no mention I can find of performance issues on AMD there does appear to be a flickering issue that's fixed by applying adaptive multisampling in Radeon Settings.
