would a Gigabyte GTS 250 with a modified cooler be a good replacement for a dying 8800GT from ASUS?
GTX 260 doesn't have any decent modded coolers. My pc is pretty loud anyway i don't want to add something to make it louder, my 8800gt just makes a slight whining noise with its tiny fan when temps get high.
4870/50 too hot too loud
same goes for 4890
The rest of cards are too expensive. Wish there was a decent GTX 260 with a custom cooler or a 4890 that wasn't some ridiculous price.

The GTS 250 is a rebranded 9800GTX, which itself is an 8800GTS with slightly higher clocks. To me it seems like a waste of money for you, as it won't be much better than what you have already.

Perhaps the Gigabyte GTX 260? Otherwise, you could always get a different card and put a third-party cooler on it.

Looking at your sig, in all probability it's the 6 fans that make your PC loud :p Can you not turn a few of them off? A stock Q6600 and 8800GT isn't really a hot system. I have the same combo with the Q6600 at 3.2Ghz, and get away with two 120mm case fans on low speed.

It's not worth doing unless you didn't really want much more performance. Even so, you would be daft to choose a 250 over a 4850 with the price drops. Sounds like you prefer nvidia. In which case you need a GTX 260-216

I like my stuff nice and cool, my fans would not make as much noise if it wasnt for all of them either making a crackling noise or a whiny noise or any combination of other noises that fans can make. I dont know why cant they just make a nice humming sound my NZXT and Coolermaster 120mm fans do.

The most of the noise comes from my damn MaxOrb CPU cooler. Gives alright temps though around 33,37,32,33 at the moment and its pretty hot here w
24C room temp. With the recent fan adjustment my 8800GT dropped to 40.78C idle but as soon as i put the side pannel back on its 42C does it really block that much airflow its got holes everywhere.

I'm a bit of a temp freak, i like stuff cool but scared of liquid cooling so i have to put up with the noise, it sounds like about 50 bees under water which isnt too bad since its a nice hum but still.

Anyways on topic- that gainward gtx 260 isn't much better than stock people say there just as loud as stock and not much different temp wise.
Why is that damn blower styled cooler always used its so crap imo a tiny little cooler in the middle card makes more difference than all that jet engine.

I'd say the GTX260 would be pretty quiet at idle, certainly quieter than 6 case fans. Might get a bit whiny under load, but when you're playing games, who cares? :p

The 260GTX isn't all that loud except when the fans are really spun up... in most non stress testing/non benchmarking situations they shouldn't really spin up that much.

I don't know what the noise is like on the gainward:

compared to the stock cooler but that seems a killer card to me.

What is the fan speed on your GTX 260 MaxCore?
And your idle + load temps on whatever most stressing game you play.

Idle its 45% (tho 40% would be ok but I need it to get my custom ramp curve)
Which gives idle temps of approx 35-38C depending on the ambient temp that day.

Underload it usually caps off at around 68C with around 70% fan iirc - I'd have to double check that.

Using furmarks extreme burn test it levels off at 75-76C with about 80% fan.

I have my fan profile using a custom ramp that sacrifices quiet for better cooling, you could probably make a ramp for quieter fan and still keep temperatures within reasonable ranges.

70%? isnt that a bit loud?
I have to say i like the look of those idle temps and load temps i just hope its not too loud. My 8800GT is pretty much silent i think

70% is getting a tad loud, but I don't mind the noise and prefer the cooler temps.

Can you imagine dual 260GTX running 100% fan? :P

These 2 4870's come with the cooler in the centre and should run cool/silent enough plus they offer a good bit more performance over the 8800gt.

One of the comments from a buyer in the review section wrote this about the toxic: I am very impressed with this card after replacing my 9800GTX, which died.
Runs quieter than my last card and the cooler does a really nice job of keeping temps down also. Performance is top notch especially at the higher i play at. Great price.

So according to this guy the cooler is better than the 9800gtx so most likely better than the gtx250 if nv have not changed the cooler.
