How much better is a GTS 450 1024MB over the older 9800GT 1024MB as it's been suggested to me that i should stick with the 9800GT while i'm still running Windows XP ?

Thanks

Going from 9800GT to GTS450 is hardly a worthwhile upgrade.

GTS450 has already been confirm to be around the same speed as GTS250 (but with dx11), and GTS250 is rebranded 9800GTX+. So in as way, you are asking if it is worth it to move from 9800GT to 9800GTX+ :p

Pretty sure the 9800GT can handle most game bar the known demanding ones at 1680x1050. If you want a noticably upgrade, the GTX460 768MB should be the bare minimum.

You must have turned the little nag screen off when the screen complains your not running the native resolution

Ice Tea, go into the Control Panel (under the start menu), select display, then select the last tab on the top row of tabs.

Under here it should tell you what resolution your running at. If the slider can go farther to the right, your not a native resolution - and you really should be with a screen that size.

Hope this helps.

Hi res gaming doesn't make me play any better at online multiplayers :D

Aslong as the screen moves in sync with the mouse i'm pretty happy. :p

This is what annoys me about gfx card generations. I've had an 8800gt for ages now.

Each new generation, the lower end cards (aka 5670, gts250, and now the gts450) aren't really getting any better year on year.

Which means every new generation that comes along, I'd still have to buy a mid-range or higher-end card to get a worthwhile upgrade.

So my question is... how many years is it going to be before the low-end cards get a significant boost?

If you're on a budget an 85 quid GTX 275 from the MM would be a significant boost over an 8800 GT ;)

I'm hoping that some future card will provide a performance increase whilst also using less power and making less noise than my 8800gt ;)

Hence I keep looking at the new low-end cards and biding my time ;)

An HD5750 or HD5770 uses the same power or less at load than an 8800GT:

A 5770 sure does seem to fit the bill. Did promise myself I wouldn't buy another ATI card tho, for various reasons, including having a boat load of trouble with them in the past, and their crappy support for Linux.

Will wait and see what the 6000 series brings.
