currently i run a 600 wat psu with a gts450 card i am getting a hd 6870 as an upgrade will the power supply be good enough?

To be honest, I would strongly recommend you replace that £15 PSU before putting a new £175 graphics card in.

I would recommend something like this (here is a review).

If your budget it fixed - then you could afford the above PSU and this graphics card, instead of the 6870 and remaining with the poor PSU. This is how the 5850 compares to the 6870, the performance difference really isn't huge and the jump from a GTS 450 is still significant.

that graphic card is not much of a upgrade from the gts450 which i have already

Anandtech puts the 5850 as having at least a 50% fps improvement over the gts 450. I can't see that as "not much of an upgrade".

Oh, and no there isn't a cheaper alternative. Spend good money on a good PSU, or watch your parts fry.

what about second hand?

PSUs over about 4 years old can't cope with modern graphics cards.

PSUs under 4 years old, with a decent wattage and made by reputable manufacturers, don't tend to be much cheaper.

Bite the bullet and don't be a cheapskate. The very cheapest I'd recommend (and I use the word recommend in the loosest of senses) is the OCZ 500W StealthXStream2 at £50.99.
