A friend currently has a Sapphire 4850 512meg and a Core 2 E5200 clocked to 3.1 gig and 4 gig ram.

To make for a better Battlefield 3 experience he has been offered a GTS450 Gainward 2 gig brand new for £57, would this be any better than the Radeon? his monitor res is 1680x1050. Thanks.

Hi there,

Looking at this test the GTS 450 really isn't any faster than the HD 4850 (in crysis at least). In newer games the GTS 450 may be slightly faster than the HD 4850, but the gap won't be very big.

If you want a substantial upgrade over the HD 4850 I would suggest saving up £100 and going for a HD 6850 or GTX 460 1GB. This chart compares the GTS 450 and HD 6850.

Aye, but the graphics memory has little to do with the performance on it's own. Often companies put large (and unnecessary) amounts of RAM on lower-end cards so they can get more interest and charge higher prices - even though the performance is not affected since the card is limited by the relatively slow GPU core.
