GTX 1060 6GB to replace a GTX 670 worth it?

Ok, I know the 1060 is not a top end card but I don't want to be paying out a huge amount. Currently my lads PC runs an AMD FX 6300 with a GTX 670. Would it be worth swapping out the 670 for a 1060 6GB?

Gaming is 1080P max, the 1060 would drop straight in whereas I believe the 1070 and up need a new PSU for the connectors? Also, a 1070 and above will just be bottle necked anyway.

So, question is, would this card give better FPS to a degree that makes it worth spending out 270 pounds?

Depending on the replies, I need to order today for the deal!

if its just 1080 I wouldnt bother at todays prices. Im still running 2 670s in sli at 1080/144hz and o a lot of the time it doesnt hit 144hz and recent A+ titles sometimes need a drop from super high settings and 8x to be playable but I can live with that

- 1070's typically require a single 8 pin connector, which is the same wattage as a 2x6 pin set up (you could run an adapter cable 2x6 > 1x8)
- I have a 1070 and it (at the time I switched) was about 1.8 times my 780ti, which was on par with the 670 SLI I ran before (changed for games with no SLI support), so about 3.5 times a single 670.
- 1060 6GB is about 2/3 the shaders of a 1070, and 3/4 of the VRAM, so would expect it to be at least 2x as fast as a single 670, probably more

regardless of all of the above, it really is a terrible time to have to buy a new GPU with the impact of mining on the market, and nearly £600 for a 1070 in stock is a joke, and whilst over 300 for a 1060 is ridiculous as well, it's not quite so bad.

I'd suggest if you want to give your boy a good boost in frames without spending a crazy amount, then you should look at a 2nd hand GTX970 (if you can find one around £100), or if you have enough power supply, a 780ti (which should be unaffected by mining prices as they get a much lower hashrate but consume more power than modern cards)

Hope that helps! :)

a 1060 has about 40% more performance over a 670, so its a pretty good upgrade, certainly enough to turn "just about playable" into "plays great" and "not playable" into "plays fine" :P

Assuming you're jumping onto the current offer here https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/t...t-7-big-discounts-on-graphics-cards.18810858/ I'd say its fine. You'd definitely be able to see the improvement and it should last a good few years, but its hard to see what's around the corner. Could be that prices stay high for a long time :( But new cards may be as few as 2 months out and who knows what that will bring

Thanks all for the advice, have ordered the 1060, I think with the discount Overclockers put on it the card was about as good a value as I was going to get anywhere, could not see anyone else even close to that price for the 6gb. Thanks Overclockers, will keep my lads PC going fine for a couple more years. Some places have it up at 400+ pounds! Crazy prices.

It's absolutely nuts, I unknowingly but very luckily decided to build a new PC about 12 months ago with an rx480 8gb, which is basically the same performance as a gtx 1060 6gb.. I've just been sat awe of the price rises over the last 12 months.
