GTX 1070 issue? Mabye?

Hey guys,

Installed my new 1070 the other day, running nice, my only gripe so far is that I played BF1 for the first time today on it in multiplayer, and in 1080p med/ultra settings I'm getting an AVERAGE of around 80-90 FPS :eek:

I thought I should be getting more than that? Is there any settings in Windows 10 or BF1 that I can try to up this?

That's not right at all, do you have geforce experience installed? If so try going to settings > general > then move the slider for share off. This solved every fps drop issue my mate had on his 1080. Failing that you could do a new clean install of the drivers and see if that helps.

Any other games affected?

Changed the slider for share off, and reinstalled / updated drivers, still the same, I mean its totally playable, no lag etc.. but for a 1070 it should be better..I have only played DOOM and that was giving me around 180-190 average at 1080p.

In heavy CPU situation the i5 will hold you back, BF1 is quite demanding on the CPU and the Battlefield series love more cores/threads.. Changing GPU based settings will not help you just putting more stress onto the CPU.
Been in the same situation with i5 before switching to an i7, honestly ignore people that say i5 is good enough for gaming and an i7 is a waste of money they clearly not been in the situation themselves to test this.

I have just created a thread in CPU asking if an upgrade from my 4670K to a 4770 i7 would be beneficial, and I am not overclocking at all weather I change or not, so the K version on the 4770 would not be needed.

So in your opinion a i7 would help with the CPU demanding games against my i5?

What I did was bought used i7 2600k from OCUK user selling thread and sold my i5 on didn't loose out on much with getting the i7 at a good price. I have since moved onto i7 3770k with getting an offer from a friend I couldn't say no to.
If you can sell the i5 at a decent price and put towards the i7 I would say defo go with it. I was really surprised at the outcome.. Games are now starting to use these extra cores/threads much more then they used to hence still the bad advice around the i7 when it comes to gaming. Consoles are now 8 cores we now have games built with this inmind. Even almost all newest games recommend the i7 has the go to CPU.

I can source a i7 4770 with warranty for less than I believe I can sell my 4670K fully boxed with stock cooler so wouldn't be losing out, if anything I can make 15-20 quid. So I might list this CPU and take the i7 plunge..cheers mate

Make sure in the games advanced video options resolution scale is set at 100.

You should aim for a 4790k if you motherboard supports it, If you're not overclocking a stock clock 4790k will be best for gaming, I had a 4770k which sat at stock of 3.4, 3.9 turbo, I swapped it for a 4790k and even at it's stock clocks of 4.0 and 4.4 turbo it made a difference in cpu heavy games. I'm not saying it's worth moving from a 4770k to a 4790k as it's not but if you can get a 4790k instead of a 4770 or 4770k it's a good move for gaming and it's not going to cost you much more.

Hey again guys,

Just played some CS DM to see how my FPS there is looking, and the result

not good...

its hovering around the same FPS that was on my GTX 1060? WTF! Only in the 220fps range, shouldn't it be maxing out at 299-300? It must be my CPU holding things back? Surely?

But yes you seem to be hitting a CPU bottleneck.

As a side note to a comment above, having owned i3-6100, i5 6600k and i7-6700k I maintain they are all perfectly capable gaming CPUs, but if you have your eyes set on really high FPS like you're after you want to have 8+ threads these days.

LOL, yeah, I am being quite anal about this, but after forking out for the 1070 I really want to get the most out of my system I can, i can wait with the performance I have atm till I see what Ryzen has to offer..

Before you condemn your cpu, have you checked the resolution scale in bf1 settings ? i'm only using an i5 with a 1070 and I get 120vg fps with everything maxed out in game .

hi danny, yeah, i see the resolution scale has been set to 100. is that not the correct setting?

yeah that's the correct setting , have you tried running a benchmark like 3d mark to compare scores with similar set ups .

I think that the cpu is the culprit, just finished a long bf1 sesh and the gpu usage was peaking around 80% and cpu was at 100% pretty much constant.

I saw something similar in BF1 single player with my i5 and 1070 (also at 1080p max settings). The GPU usage was around 80-100% but was clearly being slightly bottlenecked by the i5, although the FPS was always between 100-144 FPS on G-Sync so was perfectly smooth for me.

I've considered upgrading my 3570K to an i7 3770 but have not yet come across a game where I'd see a noticeable improvement.

CPU will be the limiting factor here but I'd hardly call this a bottleneck

80+ frames in BF1 is perfectly playable but as I mentioned in the other thread, look at what games you play and what core counts they prefer. You don't mention the monitor you have - I am assuming some 144hz monitor? In my case as long as I am between 50 and 90 I am happy - that's on a G-sync 100hz monitor. If I had an ordinary 60hz one anything above 60 fps is a waste IMO.

I have ordered a new MOBO and will OC a little and try and squeeze some more frames, and yeah its a 144hz monitor I'm running. I have read a lot of issues on the BF forum and hopefully the FPS drops into the 50's is bugs and patched will help hopefully.
