GTX 1080 fans spinning issue

Hey folks

I've got this wierd issue with the fans spinning up for a fraction of a second during low usage like browsing. They do it about 8 times in succession, the RPM goes to about 1000 then to zero, then it idles for another minute before doing it again. It's friggin' annoying.

I took some screenies on CPU-Z of it happening - see the fans RMP sensor.

I've got an RMA lined up but thought I'd post here first.

What’s the fan curve on the card. My Zotac 1080 did this as the fan switched on at 40°c. It was very annoying as the fan would go to over 1000rmp for a second then off again, simply changed the fan curve to 50.

What card is it?

One of the reasons I got rid of a zotac card at the time as you couldn’t change fan speed/temperatures at idle.

Most have a 60c fan stop and fans kick in after that. Will it not allow you to make a custom fan profile for this in afterburner?

It's just on the default settings, according to the Extreme gaming engine it comes on at just below 50c, which seems to correspond with the issue.

Thanks, I'll try some alternatives.

Gigabyte GTX 1080 Gaming, I'll try the utulity to change the settings.

I created a manual fan profile in Extreme engine to come on at 25c, so the fans are now on all the time at about 600rpm but completely silent

Thanks folks ;)

I think zero rpm is a problem my 1080 zotac started out doing that kind of thing, Thenit started to twitch and when it did spin it started clicking and eventually you had to hand crank it to spin.

I sent it back and got a refund they need to spend better money on the fans of such expensive parts.

Ah Gigabyte.
They are doing something odd with their fans for the past few years.
If you look on the web there are lots of complaints about this, albeit mostly it's in the 20 series.
I don't know what the issue is but I think it's not a bug or hardware failure. I think it's deliberate.
I don't know why, but to me the most sensible reason I can think of is that perhaps Gigabyte had issues with their fans stalling when commanded on to low RPM so they "pulse" them to get them started. The problem is that if the temperature is borderline with no hysteresis then rather than a silent pulse this will be a very audible pulse.
I mean I am not at all sure and could easily be wrong about this but I have noticed with one Gigabyte card I have that there is a definite pulse where the RPM goes much faster than it should when the fan first turns on and if you catch it in a borderline situation it repeats that pulse pretty much indefinitely. The answer for me was to just write a profile that has a larger hysteresis so under normal circumstances the pulse just happens once and infrequently at that.
I think perhaps it would be wise to talk to Gigabyte Support before you return the card of you just may be wasting time and money.
Also some fans I have heard them pulsing even when running, which I attribute to the fact that they are set to run below their minimum operating RPM. Again, this sounds deliberate to stop the fans stalling, but, well, I don't know I am guessing.

'Hysteresis'. Word of the day that! :)

Interesting theory, it certainly seems to have something to it. The manual profile I made in Extreme Engine didn't hold up too well - after the PC coming out of standby the fans went to default setting or went on a constant spin stop every second ongoing. I changed the utility to Auros Engine and that seems more stable.

I was uncertain to go down the RMA route as I thought they would report not finding any fault.
