hey guys,

Just bought a practically brand new 1080ti from the members market - a KFA2 1080Ti EXOC White - and Im having some serious issues.

As soon as I load into any game (post menu/character select screen) my PC powers off. I then get greeted with the asus surge protection message. After going into the BIOS and rebooting Im back at my desktop and everything is ok again, unless I try to play a game.

What I dont understand is for example in overwatch I can sit at the menu screen (GPU usage @ 90+%) just fine, the same with Black Desert Online, I can sit at the character select screen just fine (GPU @ 85-95+% usage) but as soon as I go into a match or log into the character, the PC Crashes within 45 seconds.

What I've tried -

Fresh driver install
Older driver install
BIOS to optimised defaults
Reconnected PCI-E power cables

The card is running at stock settings. My machine was running just fine with the 1070 strix I had installed this morning, and my PSU has handled way more power draw than this card could hope to muster.

Any ideas guys??

You've probably already checked however have you spread out all your hardware so that they draw power from different rails. I remember whacking too much on one rail once without thinking and had the same symptoms.

What PSU is it and have you tried running things with the 1070 again to see if the same thing happens?

I hadn't thought of that, and will probably have a look however wouldn't it be strange that the current configuration that it's in was able to run SLI 480s + custom watercooling, without breaking a sweat and now it's struggling on a single 1080ti?

Yeah, if it could handle that then you would think it would have no issue with a 1080ti - I'm sure someone more knowledgable than I will chime in soon though!

Edit: It may also be worth checking to make sure that the fans on everything are spinning up to the right speed just in case something is getting toasty and causing the system to shutdown.

sounds like you've been stitched up mate!!

??

I resent that comment as it was myself who sold the card.

Card was bought start of June 2017 from OCUK and there would be NO reason for me to sell a faulty card as I could easily have got the card RMA'd if that was the case.

GPU ran fine here with no issues at all running on a Ryzen X370 ASRock board with a EVGA 750GQ PSU.

I've been messaging Jez back and forth since he emailed me about the issue earlier.

I would as others have said test the another card, possibly test the card in another system.

I had the exact same issue with my rma'd zotac AMP extreme. Would run all day long with no usage but after 10 minutes in a game the PC would lock up and restart or just lock up completely.

Same issue with ASUS Anti-surge?

From everything I can see online all posts seem to point the finger at the PSU in most cases.

did you run Display Driver Uninstaller to clean up all your old AMD driver stuff before popping an nvidia in there? I have seen exactly what your problem is before when someone I know did this. I reinstalled windows in the end and the card has been perfect for 3 years so far since. Also you know the 6+2pin PCIE gpu cables? Have a good wiggle to see if the 2 pin part is properly clicked in - sometimes it tends to get caught on the wrong side of the clip or slips out.

Has the additional draw of the Ti made your current ram timings or speed of overclock of cpu/ram unstable? You could try this or moving the card to another pci-e slot too.

I tried resetting BIOS to optimised defaults but still had the same problem
