I got my XFX GTX 260 the other day, great service from OC once again. I was just having a go at rfactor there, not exactly famous for it's graphics. Regardless, I noticed while flipping through menus a fairly loud noise. Which got worse when I went into game. I flipped through my Z-10 menus til I got to the evga precision screen and it was reading GPU temps well over 80.

Normal?

I just came up from a 4850 which was a fantastic card but was a bit of a radiator. I wasnt expecting this from the 260.... My case has good airflow and the card is running stock clocks at the moment.

If its normal fair enough, seems weird to me though. Thoughts?

Cheers

2xx cards do get fairly hot; my old 280 would reach 84c occasionally. However, XFX 260s are known for dodgy fan control; there are reports all over the web that the fan doesn't seem to be ramping up properly. You can force it to a certain speed with RivaTuner if the temps bother you.

Would it not be possible to remove the BIOS with GPU-Z, and redo a new fan profile in captured BIOS, and then re-flash graphics card with updated BIOS?

Uninstall the nvidia performance tools stuff if you have that - it has a bad habit of forcing the fan to default speed so it doesn't ramp up - bit of a retarded design.
