Right guys,

whenever i play Left 4 Dead, sometimes it will lock or crash to desktop. Then when i minimize to end process, STEAM will lock.

I stop steam from running and about 2mins later the system will lock and need a hard reset.

Sometimes, i will start my system up and it will get to the desktop but my monitor will flash disconnected. I will then have to hard reset again.

Oh and another annoying one is, i will press shutdown and it will just lock and will require a hard shutdown.

It is ever since putting my new GTX280 it has done this.

I sometimes get a BSOD and it says IRQL not equal etc and then the screen goes black and the system resets itself.

I have run memtest for 9 hours straight and Prime95 and no fails.

I can only think its my GPU. I did a full re-format of Vista x64 when putting my new GPU in.

My GPU isnt overheating and it isnt always locking when under load.

My specs are:

4 x 1gb DDR3 OCZ 2000mhz
Q6600 at stock
XFX 790i Ultra
BFG GTX 280
Tagen 1100w PSU.

Any ideas??? Im puzzled. Could it be the PSU?

delete drivers with driversweeper and start over

try with newer/whql drivers

are you using 180+ drivers already - if so are they official or beta

have you got the latest chipset drivers?

That doesnt explain automatic restarts does it?

I have all the latest drivers and BIOS.

Left 4 Dead brought out some instability in my OC, even though memtest ran for hours on end fine, prime95 wouldnt though but considering prime95 and memtest are fine for you that 99% rules out ram/cpu, so i'd put it on the graphics or a conflict.

I know its hassle but might be worth removing both of those, uninstalling and trying without. If fine, then try with just the NIC and then with the Sound card. Its a longshot but would rule out irq conflict.

Or if you have another pc/graphics card to try or can borrow/swap with a friend?

I had an 8800 Ultra in there before with all the current hardware and it was fine.

Never crashed etc. Just when i put the GTX 280 in. I wonder if its a PSU problem as i have to use the adaptor for the 6 & 8 pin connectors.

That could be a possibility yeah but best option is to try different parts on the setup or try the 280 on another setup. Damn pcs and the need for process of elimination! lol

I know, it annoys me like hell. I was fine with old cheap parts but when you start spending money it becomes frustrating!

I have all the latest drivers and BIOS.

Auto restart will happen with BSOD's if its set to auto restart in the Startup and Recovery section on the system properties (advanced tab). Untick that and get the error code etc.

Might be worth trying previous nvidia drivers just to rule out driver issues. I used to get BSOD issues when i had some nvidia drivers on vista and they mentioned the same as what you mention in the initial post.

see - im not the only one who thinks this

i will ask again...
if you have latest drivers - are they official or beta?

if there is instability it might be down to that -

Right, so i used driver cleaner to get rid and reinstalled all the latest WHQL drivers.

All seemed sweet until this morning. I was just on eBay on my summary... went on to Word to print off a label and my monitor went off. It was flashing up Disconnected. I checked all the cables etc. and turned the monitor off and on yet still no picture. I restarted the computer and it loaded up fine. Whilst the computer had locked and was not displaying the picture both the harddrive light and the power light on the front panel of my case were constantly lit.

Oh... quick update. I reinstalled my Killer card drivers and enabled the network connection, as i did this and it connected to the router/net the computer Blue Screened and restarted itself.

My next step is to pull the network card out... however, I never encountered any blue screens until i replaced my 8800Ultra with the 280GTX.

Thoughts & Suggestions welcome...

Might be idea once you run out of idea's or combinations to return it and see if you can get a new one in place, could be the cards faulty, having said that it could be a game issue too, anyone else with a 280 and left 4 dead? I've got ME and it crashes after about an hour and a half's play, and somelse with a 260 said they had the same problem, i don't think it's the card as it works fine in all my games, but somethings obviously up

This is the one thing i hate about PC's all this troubleshooting malarky

Yeh, but it doesnt explain the crash on eBay.

So now, ive left my computer on all day, had my monitor turned off though. Came home and turned it on. Flashing "no signal" and i have to restart for it to work.

Even just pressing the power button (which should shut it down) doesnt work.

Right, after a couple of days i uninstalled my Killer Drivers and used the onboard ethernet. All seemed ok for one day...

Then i just left my pc on sat on desktop and after 5mins the screen just went blank and flashed up no signal and then said disconnected and the hard drive light was just on constant

Any ideas.... as it didnt blue screen or anything. I can play Left 4 Dead now (touch wood) and its fine but just keeps disconnecting the monitor saying no signal when the computer isnt under stress. I was on eBay about 10 minutes ago and it did the same thing :(

When you get a blank screen open up your case and check your graphics card fan. This happend to me when I first had my 280, the screen would go blank but the pc is still going. I checked my card and the fan had stopped spinning, I then did a hard reset and it booted up fine. This was random, it could happen twice in an hour or go all night without doing it.

The reason in the end was I had a 2x 6pin adapter to the 8pin connector on the card. I then connected a proper 8pin to the card and it was sorted.

Just an idea but worth checking out.
