gtx 280 reviews thread

thought so would probably make it a bit safer fitting a aftermarket cooler

Yes but also hotter like the GTX/Ultra, remember some of the later G92's had a bare Core.

The peep above who said the GX2 is faster, PLEASE read all the reviews.

The GX2 will win in a game that scales well with SLI but as your only getting 512MB of Memory use with it it will only work in games which need more Pixel Shading power rather than Memory Bandwidth which is now 512bit and 1024MB.

One of the reviews actually has a whole paragraph on it, dont ask me to link to it as I cant remember which one as I read them all apart from THG which wont load.

Yeah, I only read Anandtech but can't be bothered to read others as I'm not at all interested in these cards at those prices.

A little disappointing, but thats not nvidias fault, we just expected too much, these companies can't produce cards like R9700 and the 8800GTX everytime round, if it wasnt for the reviews making comments on the high noise levels I would have ordered one already but noise is an issue for me so i'm going to wait for feedback from users.

Hopefully they can address with Bioses to drop Volts in 2D mode more and then less fan RPM is needed.

Or likes of EVGA make a ACS3 model but then again they may end up all with bigger fans like the G92 did after launch.

Translated into English:

I'm disappointed in its performance so much that I can't justify purchasing one, NV look like they're struggling with the GT200s, while ATi's efforts are looking like they're going to pay off when they get their 48XXs out. If it wasn't for reviews showing how poor this card is, I would have ordered one already.

:D

Perhaps, if the noise idle and load is as bad as some reviews are reporting then I might end up considering the GTX260 or even ATI's new cards if there any good.

No, performance is more then good enough for me to buy one at these prices, thats not what i'm concerned with.

Am gaming at 1920x1200.

Will I be buying a new 200 series gpu?

What for? My current card (9800GTX) copes well enough and at the prices quoted ... it's a

At least it made my descision wether to upgrade the graphics or cpu easier - ordered a Q6600+Asus m-brd +2gb DDR2 as soon as I saw the first reviews.MUCH better investment :D

Am upgrading from Opteron 185 S939

Looks like my old faithfull 8800GTX is gonna stay with me for another few months after all.............. Crysis can wait and GTX will play everything I throw at it on a 24" with AA/AF

£550 for a new card or £550 towards a holiday..............Tough decision ;)

Surely the 8800GTX must now go down as one of THE great gfx cards, right up there with the 9700pro. At 1920x1200 with AA/Af, i cant think of a card that i would replace my gtx with.

If your on a 8800GTX/Ultra I would say skip these cards.

Screw that, been waiting over 18 months, this card is mine but i'll order mid week probably to get it for the weekend, no point ordering it now as I won't have time to play with it during the week. :)

Unfortunately there's no support for 8-channel LPCM or bitstreaming of Dolby TrueHD or DTS HD-MA

No point me upgrading at all then. They've missed the boat for HTPC enthusiasts.

Whoever is advertising "lossless blu-ray audio" on their box (think it was gigabyte or something) is clearly false advertising. Hopefully ATI can do better.

Same here, i game at 1920x1200 and dont have crysis so for me its a no brainer, 8800 gtx stays put. Got mine for £330 so not that long after launch.

Had mine since day one, took quite a few months for the price to drop to £330, I also game at 1920*1200, some massive increases in reviews at this resolution over a 9800GTX and these are the release drivers, things will improve as they always do with "new" cards. :D

I only really play COD4 mp and some RTS games and my current card is fab at those so unless the 280 can smash ArmA i doubt i'l upgrade. Well not that i'l upgrade for at least 4 months as im back to Afghan in 6 days but come the end of the year i'l be looking to move the rig in sig to my lads room and build afresh.

So, looks like 280 GTX > 9800 GX2 > 260 GTX > 3870 X2 > 8800 Ultra > 9800 GTX.

I presume when the ATi cards come out the prices will come down? Once the 260 GTX comes down to nearer £250 it will be a good deal. Especially if they can squeeze some extra out with driver updates.

9800 GX2 (Standard)

8800 GTX (Standard)

GTX280 (Clocked)

GTX 280 (Standard)

I had access to one today, So i did some Crysis benching, The card is pretty disapointing and runs hotter than a GX2 lol

As for clocking the card anything more than 60Mhz extra on the core and it artifacts badly.
