Hi there, as title really. Just plonked a new GTX 285 in me computer to replace my 8800GTX everything seems fine (has been for 3 days anyway but I haven't used ANY 3D applications at all)...

Thought I'd get some overclocking done before I play any games, as a base. I just thought I'd run "Furmark" testing program to make sure everthing is ok...

So I run the "Xtreme burning" mode...Within literally 1-2 seconds, normally before a picture even appears the computer reboots.

Would this be down to my power supply? I would have thought it was more than good enough to power a sinlge GTX 285 given it's branding etc.

I do have 4 ODD drives\2 HDs\4 SSD HDs\couple of fans...

Dunno...maybe I should try some different 12v rails or what?

Hmmmm....Any ideas? Is it my PSU or something else...I've even put my CPU\mem back to stock with exactly the same results.

Many thanks :(

Sounds like the PSU, this is what happened with my old 8800GT SLI setup with insufficent power.

How old is the PSU?

It's pretty old, about 3 years but it's never done anything like this before...Just very surprised if it is the PSU it's never once had a reboot like this. It does sorta feel like a "trip switch" has gone off when it happens. In that it doesn't feel electronically initiated if that makes sense...Happens very quickly, computer goes off completely for a couple of seconds.

Sounds like PSU to me... PSUs degrade over time your prolly just pushing it slightly over the edge with the new videocard.

Its possible your overloading a particular rail tho.

If it's a few sec I'd say it was the time for the card to start drawing some serious juice and it's overloading the PSU. What are the amps on the 12V rails?

You could also unplug everything non-essential, optical drives, all but the HDD with the OS, case fans, whatever other cards you may have and try and see if the PSU can cope with that.

Thanks for all the replies.

The temp of the card in "RealTemp" is around 40c. Obviously this is at 2D clocks though since it reboots in 3D instantly. I will try swapping some cables round but looks like I'm going to need a new PSU....

Drat! lol...

Anyone got a suggestion for a good bang for buck quality PSU bearing in mind I will never be running SLI\dual GPU in the forseeable future?

Thanks, :)

OCZ 700watt fatality has been working really nicely for me with 260GTX SLI, my OCZ gamexstreams have been working great as well for years, the 2 stealthextremes I've had tho didn't last more than a year or so before the power output dropped off considerably.

When it comes to power supplies I'd recommend corsair. Solid as a rock. Bit pricer then other brands and maybe others can recommend cheaper good performers, but don't skimp on arguable the most important component in your system.

Thats going to be fine. I had a corsair over a year ago. It was fine, i just didnt feel that 520 was enough.

tbh anything around the £100 mark is pretty much guaranteed to be good.

However as Spazzfish said, its the most important component, so always good to do research firt.

Will do the job nicely, my youngest brothers pc is powerd by TX 750 and his running Q6600 @ 3.4Ghz with factory overclocked GTX 285, so you should be fine :)

Well praise the lord...it was the PSU :)

Just thought I'd post back and let you all know in case anyone here gets similar behaviour.

Got meself a Corsair TX750watt...Seems pretty "no frills". But I prefer that than paying for lights and all that even though it cost £100 but hopefully it will be good for another build in the future years.
