Just wondering how this card stands up against today's cards?

What kind of FPS would I be expecting and stuff? :p

Sorry, im terrible at explaining stuff like this...

Thanks :D

Approx GTX 550Ti HD6770 level of performance.

Really depends what game, BF3 @ 1080p medium ~ 20-30fps as you run around. More to render = lower FPS.

I've just replaced my GTX280

It's quite a bit faster than both the 6770 which is essentially just a glorified 5770 and the 550Ti which is stunted by its 192 shader processors and 192 bit memory interface. It's actually nearing 5850/GTX 460 performance but obviously without the DX11 capabilities.

Hi,
I went from a GTX280 OC2 (650Mhz edition same speed as GTX285)
to a GTX580 twin frozer II , it was a nice increase BUT not earth shattering, I game @ 1920 x 1200.

If I knew then what I know now, I would have waited longer for the next gen stuff

Really? I just upgraded to a GTX560Ti and it's 2 -3 times faster at the same settings. A GTX580 should be 3-4 times faster!

That site is woefull at comparisons to be fair. I mean it even tries to say in one benchmark that the 550Ti is more powerfull than a 460 which everybody knows is completely wrong!

Take a look at Anandtechs GPU bench for a better representation.

Here's the 285 compared to the 5850 - link

And the 285 demolishing the 5770 (6770) - link

I'm sorry but the 560Ti is not 2-3 times faster than a 280/285.

Again a comparison using Anandtechs bench GPU 2011 gives you a more reasonable answer - link

You seem to be forgetting the 280/285 was Nvidias flagship single GPU card before the 480 was released and even today it's still quite a powerfull card.

The 285 is slightly slower than a 460 1GB. Comparing it to the 460 768mb is not fair since most games use more than 768mb these days.

In terms of current ATI cards, it sits somewhere between a 6770 and a 6870. Probably on par with a 6850.

I had a GTX280 for 3 years and recently upgraded to a GTX560Ti and then got a second one to go SLI.

I am well aware of how well the GTX280 performs however in modern games such as BF3 it's barely playable even at medium settings. In older game engines, e.g. source it still performs well. It depends what games you play.

The GTX280 was about comparable to the original launch GTX460 768MB. For the GTX560Ti, Shader count, core frequency and memory frequency have increased. In addition there is DX11 which improves GPU efficiency compared to a similar game in DX10.

The GTX560Ti is a big leap from a GTX280, a GTX580 has a further 35% more shaders therefore will be a substantial increase.

Sure in older games which were already running at 60+ fps you won't see a difference. In modern games you will.

550Ti has the same number of cuda cores as the GTX280/5 and runs at a far higher frequency. It is hamstrung by a poor memory interface which limits the overall bandwidth but is still a capable card.

Anandtech
the GTX 550 Ti could almost be a decent replacement for the GTX 460 768MB

Criticism was pricing

This launch review shows the 460 trading punches with the GTX285. At 1080p there is little to chose between the cards.

Finally, if the GTX280/5 is still such a capable card why is the second hand price around £50 ...

No it doesn't, the 550Ti is a stinker of a card and it actually only has 192 Cuda cores which is 48 less than the GTX 280/285s! The GTX 280/285 is also not held back by a measly 192 bit memory interface.

The 550 Ti is effectively Nvidias rebadged 450 GTS, have a look at the big performance difference between this and a 460 GTX 768MB here.

Because it's old tech, the power consumptions not pretty, most of them don't have any warranty left, they run fairly warm/hot and they have no DX11 support. £50 isn't a bad price considering 5850s have gone for £80-£90 in the mm recently.

550ti Vs 285

20% less cuda cores, 38% higher clocks

GTX285 memory bandwidth 159 GB/sec
550Ti memory bandwidth 98.4 GB/sec

Faster core clock ratio, slower memory bandwidth.

Performance in the same ball park when you put it in the overall context of GPU performance.

LOL, how do you work that one out  GTX 285 is a fair bit faster than a 550Ti or 6770. I think I've pretty much proved that in my previous posts which you obviously haven't bothered to read!

You quoted Anandtech compare .. I quoted their review which states the 550Ti is almost a replacement for the GTX460, except it was priced too high. I also linked to the Anandtech GTX460 review which shows that at launch it was comparable to the GTX280/85.

I accept that the 550Ti may be more GTX275 in performance but it's not the stinker you make out and is the most similar in performance to the GTX285 when compared to the 5 series lineup.

The stock GTX560 has 40% more shaders and 25% higher clocks
The stock GTX560Ti has 60% more shaders and 27% higher clocks
The stock GTX580 has 113% more shaders and 19% higher clocks

My point is that the GTX550Ti is the closest 5 series card on sale to the performance of the GTX285.

Which 5 series card would you compare it to?

I've got GTX285 SLI and i get about max 100fps and min 60fps on bf3 medium settings, On ultra settings (-DX11 stuff) quite high max fps (50ish) but sometimes im as low as 20fps at times, stuttery and unplayable at times.

Single card id suspect about 40fps on medium. which is reasonable for a card of that age.
