I was on here the other night discussing the merits of the nvidia 460 and also from what i've read the 1gb version appears to be more than just the manufacturer throwing extra ram at it for no real reason.
So i'm thinking of going for the Gainward 1gb model when all of a sudden i see there's a 2gb model.
Weird things is the spec isn't as good as the 1gb version, the shader clock is reduced to 1400mhz from 1600 and the memory is at 3600mhz as opposed to 4000mhz.
So is this a case of a manufacturer throwing extra ram onto a vanilla card hoping to grab peoples attention?
It's only £5 more than the 1gb so it's difficult to know if it's a good card or not.

has anyone hear or read anything about it?

P.S. Just noticed it's a GS and not a GTX but the question stands is the extra 1gb of ram worth it?

Depends on res and if you're using multiple monitors. 2gb vram is pretty overkill on a 460 imo. I'd go with the 460 1gb gtx out of the two.

2GB is worth it where games push past the 1GB buffer, not many do and so it really is not worth it IMO. I wouldn't pay £200 for a 460 either, buy the cheapest and overclock it yourself, or at least buy one with a decent cooler like the gigabyte or MSI, for £200 you are better off getting a 5850 or for a little more a 470.

words of wisdom here

Only really worth it if your going SLI at very high resolutions. At resolutions which go over 1GB a single card would unlikely be fast enough to make any use of 2GB. But it would be a different matter with 2 cards both having 2GB.

i bought the 2gb palit one performance wise because of the lower clocks it dosnt make a diff cuz you just oc the hell out of it :P but to be honest its not worth the extra cash unless your doing sli with 2 of the 2gb ones because 2x2=2 and 1+2=1 :P for mega high resolutions

Games go over 1gb if you are using surround/eyefinity.

I hit 1.3-1.4gb vram usage with 6004x1200 res at 8-16x csaa.
At 1920x1200 I usually hit 700-900mb with 32-64x aa depending on game.

So as you can see, unless you are going surround don't bother.
