Heya guys

I had a old gtx 460 laying in a box that i added to a spare machine build simply because well the parts where there :p

The GTX 460 in question is the 1gb model made by msi and was there over clocked verson with there large circular heatsink and fan onboard.

Now for the issue when playing any game the temp jumps to 90c +, in haven it will run to 99c then throttle down and up as the temp goes up and down.

I have tried to underclock the card, reseated the heatsink using ic diamond and let it bed in then swapped to some arctice silver 3 i think it was. both times checked it was seated with no clearance probs.
I checked the caps ect... and the card looks in good condition.
It was working when stored away and was put back in it's box for storage.
The card in question runs all day long with no issues, it's only gaming that see the heat issue, there is no probs with os hangs or the like if it was not for the heat coming from the card during the gaming I would not have noticed there was a issue.

The spare machine in queston spec is below.
Amd phenom 1090t black with aftermarket cooler with 120mm apachie black fan
8gb cosair 1600mhz ram
asrock mobo dont have the model to hand, but the board is solid.
500gb seagate barracuda
1.5tb wd carviar green
3x apachie 120mm fans for system cooling 1 top back extracting, 1 side @gfx card extracting and 1 front inhailing.
Ocz zs 550w bronze power supply.

Any help or advise would be great.

Have a good day.

Point another fan at it? Maybe you could reduce voltage a bit for your stock clocks?

Well it has a apachie black extracting out of the side of the case just beside it, I could swap that to blow on the card, I also have a antec spot cool somewhere So can try that aswell.

As for the voltage good idea I'll check that out and see if I can find a refrence voltage for stock clock and apply that and see how I get on

Ok so found out the stock voltage is .950 so set it to that and did a fast test with haven
and the temps raised a lot slower going to a max of 92c but averaging about 88c
so decided to undervolt the card test with one full run of haven inbetween I have it down to 0.937 with max temp of 88c and a average of 86c.
I have been reading about some ppl getting these cards down to 0.830 so I will try to get it down some more over time with 1hr haven benchmark inbetween.

Bty when I get the settings I want is there a way to set the gfx bios to make the changes permanent so i dont have to use msi afterburner ect?

For sure man, you can use Fermi Bios editor

Some good guides there and the download package contains everything you need.

I've done the same with my GTX 480's BIOS. Just be sure to double/triple check everything as you go and of course before you flash.

460 should be nowhere close to those temps.

My old one used to run at 60°C absolute max, idle at <30°C, and that was overclocked too.

Check the fan profile in MSI Afterburner. What kind of % is the fan usage getting up to..?

That's all I can think of, apart from the card being ****ed. :S
