Hello I'm looking for some help. I decided to upgrade my Evga 8800 (640) with the Gtx 460 but I'm having problems. Playing Bfbc2 I'm freezing and the game just feels really unstable and choppy. Anyone have any idea why this is happening? I'm also getting artifacts on the screen (sharp black verticle lines when i'm running)

Things I've tried

Updated graphic drivers (266.58)
Formatted xp (32 bit) and windows 7 (64bit) to test. Nothing on these drives apart from the game and updated drivers.
lowered the resolution from 1680/1050 to 1280/1024 (Same effects)
lowered the game settings. (Same effects)
Changed game from playing from CD to Drive
Changed sound settling to 44.1khz from 94khz and lowered game sound quality from high to low.

I would just like to know if anyone can see a bottleneck or confliction that's causing the problem.

Sharp lines during demanding 3D graphics often means a GFX card fault, either it's clocked higher than it likes or it's overheating/has a fault elsewhere. I would send it back for a replacement.

I play BC2 with a GTX460 OC as well and have no problems with smoothness in dx11 and that's at 1920x1200 with AA!

Your spec is fine, If the CPU will OC some more then you might get a few extra minimum frames but there won't be much in it. PSu is also fine, I have the OCZ M600 but on a P45 mobo.

In your BIOS you could also make sure that the GFX turbo settings are set to standard and not fast/turbo although I don't think this is the issue here.

Sounds like it could be an overheating issue. If you run Heaven, or Furmark with Afterburner open, you can see if its getting a bit toasty.

Thanks for the reply. I've checked the temps and they are sitting around 38+ gaming. When the stutters starts I've noticed the fps dropping to 22. Couldn't find the GFX turbo settings in my bios. Just got the card a couple of days ago and it's never been clocked apart from the default oc on the card.

Tested with MSI Kombustor
res 1680/1024
Temps seems to idle around 61
fps avg 37

The screen tearing seems to have sorted after changing the res to 1680/1024 but it's just really laggy.

Going back to windows 7 to do more tests.

Bad Company 2 shouldn't be laggy at all, I have the lesser 768MB version of the GTX460 and it plays that game fine on max settings, DX11, with 4 x AA on 1440 x 900 and 1680 x 1050 between 40 - 60 FPS, and it only dips to 40 on huge/multiple explosions it normall sits at 55 - 60 FPS.

I have a very smiler setup to yours, only cpu & graphics overclocked higher. I have just ran BFBC2 now after about 1 month and it is running fine on mine. It seems to me like you have a bad GFX card. Have you checked the clocks of the GFX card when the game is running - using MSI Afterburner? are they going up from the power save state?

What resolution are you running bfbc2 at? and what graphic drivers are you using. Downloaded afterburner and done another test with msi.

Just about to install more games to see how they are playing. Atm my old Evga 8800 is doing a better job of running Bfbc2 than this 460. I'm starting to notice a lot of people are having problems with the drivers which could be my problem.

I'm not much of an overclocker but my mate just changed the fsb from 266 to 333 and I've kinda done that to get my 3gig. not sure what setting i'd need to use to get a better clock? It's a ThermalRight SI-128 Cooler and my chip runs about 40 ishy.

My Giga GTX460 started having artefacts at 2000Mhz mem. So I am running 850 Core/1900 Mem Clocks with 1.075 V.
I used OCCT Gpu test to check for stable clocks for the GTX460.
266.58 Drivers with 1920 x 1080.

Thanks for the help guys. I'm just going to mess around with it as I've tested it on loads of other games and it's running great. I'm hoping with new updated drivers the problem will be gone. Screen tearing seems to be worse when I'm running a lower screen resolution with 75 refresh rates.

I would have thought a higher refresh rate would be more stable hmm.. Looks like I'll need to get used to running Bfbc2 in 1680/1050 (60 refresh)

Not sure if this could effect the game but in the settings for bfbc2 setting.ini you have a setting RenderAheadLimit=2 but in nvidea CP Maximum pre-rendered frames 3 shouldn't this be the same?

Also I've also noticed that I'm only getting the option of 59 refresh rate with the setting 1680/1050 This could also be causing a problem.

Sorry for the late reply 12 hours shifts grr... Anyways just a small update on my problem. Couple of small changes I've made with the pc. Decided to overclock the q6600 to 3.2 which is running fine. I tried a 1000 things to get this card playing smooth with BFBC2 on 1680/1050 .. Ended up using driver sweep uninstalling 266.58 driver and installing the 266.35 drivers which seems to be doing the trick. The game is not running smooth but the screen tearing has vanished BONUS!! But the game is still sluggish. Should the gtx 460 have high cpu usage like this?

Until the patch is out that has been optimised for quad cores, cpu usage is quite high as expected. My 4GHz Quad with GTX460 at present is ~80-87% on each core during a battle.

Hello Again jsut thought I'd pop back on with a small update to the problems I was having.

Decided to change my ip35 pro with an Asus p5q pro. Just a change over with new heatsink paste (Arctic Silver) brought my chip temps down a fair bit :)

Reinstalled windows 7 (32bit) to run tests. After having poor fps in Bfbc2 and screen tearing I decided to play about with the vsync.

Now I was reading an interesting post that people had problems with the bc2 sound.. And online lag

http://futuremark.yougamers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=124367

Now I've tried this and it's got to be said it's made a huge diffrence to my lag in servers. I'm now using vsync so I've done some small tweaks to the settings.ini to keep the fps up.

[WindowSettings]
Width=1680
Height=1050
Fullscreen=true
RefreshRate=59.882999
VSync=false
[Sound]

I'm starting to think this is more of a bottleneck or confliction between this game and other drivers. I was still getting the same performance using high graphic settings or low ones. Thinking about changing to solid state hard drive and new processor if anyone has advice that wont cost an arm and a leg :P

Windows Experience test 5.1 hard drive everything else 7. something Could be this that's causing problems?

is your vsync on? when my vsync was on I was only getting 59-60 fps but when I turned it off it is now going up to 7x(73-78)

From what I have heard turning Vsync on will limit your FPS to 60 maximum.

To the OP..

I also have run BFBC2 on the nVidia 8800GTS card with mixed results.. it was ok. I also upgraded to an eVGA GTX460 SCEE card and I do run it at 1680x1050 as you do.

Your config file you listed seems to have all the settings up at maximum and tbh... our cards won't handle that very well.

As for the sound setting... YES you are correct. The sound does have an immense difference. Set it to "low" and next time you log in you will notice the sound has gone to "War Tapes"... it makes a big difference to your fps... but isn't really noticeable in your ears.

Also some changes to your config file would be good... you seem to have a mishmash or settings for low AND high...

Width=1680
Height=1050
Fullscreen=true
RefreshRate=59.882999
VSync=false
[Sound]
Quality=low
VoipEnable=true
SpeakerCount=0
[Graphics]

MSAA=0
Water=low

DxVersion=dx10
Aniso=0

RenderAheadLimit=2
Fov=65

You should be able to play around with your MSAA and Aniso settings.. perhaps put them to =1 for both. KEEP BLOOM = FALSE... don't activate it at all... the desert map is horrible with it enabled.

Those are the settings I use... The game still looks amazing and has zero slowdown.

A GTX460 is more than capable of outputting a decent framerate (40+) with all the settings cranked at 1680x1050. Mine certainly does anyway (this is on a overclocked Tri core Phenom II).

Have you (Op) tried some of the older Nvidia drivers (say 260.99)? I know a few of the guys on the NBR forums have been having issues running the 266.58 drivers on their M11x's (mine seems to be running fine though).
