Yes i know they are too expensive, and they can run hot and loud when pushed hard.
I it just me or does the GTX 480 availability seem to be picking up.
they have been in stock here for nearly a whole week now, and currently their is 3 different boards in stock. (and at least 5 other online retailers also have currant stock)
isn't there suppose to be practically none of these cards available, with only a couple of hundred form one AIB (even though we never found out which one) for all of Europe.
does this mean that some of the horror stories being banded about just before the arrival of these cards were in fact not correct or is it just just that initial batch hasn't sold out yet...?

I will get one once they go sub £400 - currently they are $499 in the USA and whilst I remember the usual dollars to pounds UK price conversion the price difference in America between 5870 and 480 is not that great. Over here it is a joke. Certainly doesn't seem £120 better than the 5870.

Hopefully now they are in stock Nvidia may see some slow sales and decide to amend their price in the coming months...

Then again, the price of the Eyefinity 6 rereleased 5870 is rather hilarious considering the £480 beats it in all benchmarks and they cost the same price as the extra RAM only helps in ridiculous resolutions.

Lol :p

[edit - forgot to mention the rofl-tastic 5970 price, but then again that does give a performance boost over the 480 - usually for £100 though...]

VEry hard to tell to be honest, stock improving, or the few people that will pay that much have already got theirs and what few there are, are just sitting on the shelves.

Its very hard to know and its very hard to know what Nvidia are doing because its not really in their best interest to be honest.

The main reason people assumed(me included) that they would make an extremely limited number, is because yields are low enough that they are making a loss.

The question is, where do you draw the line. Make 20, lose almost nothing but lose consumer confidence which harms you in the future, lose market share, give the other guy more sales and make obvious people like Dell only have one option.

Or make 50 million, and lose half a billion to keep supply massive, keep consumer confidence high, though, upset at the costs and lose a shedload of money retaining market share again hoping for a profitable next gen to fill that market share up with.

Or somewhere inbetween, in reality its obviously somewhere between the two extremes, but as I said, where is the line drawn. 1000 cards, 10,000, 100,000, a million , 5 million.

Its basically down to how much Nvidia are willing to lose to maintain some level of sales, most people assumed they'd make VERY few before a respin with some fixes to improve yields. At least if you can sell them at cost, you can make as many as you want and let profits from low end keep you doing well, when they actually lose you money, and quite a lot of it there HAS to be a line.

I've not really seen any numbers anywhere, would be great if say OCUK would say "we've sold 5k already and have 400 sitting in stock" or "we've sold 1000, we've got 10 on the shelves and we can't get more at all" , and similar numbers for the 5850/70 to compare.

Fud I think the last I saw a story on it was suggesting somewhere in the region of 10,000's have shipped. The 5870/50 shipped something like 80k in the first week and around 1million in the first 3 months, it looks quite likely Nvidia have sold quite a bit less than 100,000 so far, maybe massively less.

EDIT:- just occured to me, it would be awesome if some website was keeping track of numbers shipped like people were doing for the 360/PS3/Wii , would give us a great idea of comparitive numbers.

One UK etailer is now selling the 480 at £387 inc free delivery. It seems there is so much stock out there now that prices might start tumbling down.

I'm currently waiting for a £260ish 5870 from the jungle but I might just change my order as my mobo is tri-sli.
