Far Far Away!
Got the evga nvidia gtx 480 installed today with latest driver, installed fallout 3 successfully. Loaded it up and the mouse lags by a few milliseconds. Turnt off the option in windows to help precision, no luck!
Went into nvidia control panel, manage 3d settings, force off vsync, and now it's ok.

When i install the game opts for high quality, so dont see why vsync is causing an issue.

Even with vsync on, all settings low/off it lags.

As soon as forced off is enabled, its fine.
Installed the last patch available for fallout 3 too.

This problem also happens on skyrim.

Cs source was fine with vsync on

Please help,

Did you do a fresh install of windows when you got your new card? Pretty much the easiest way to determine if it's a software issue.
What powersupply are you using? I've heard of people getting weird performance when running powerful componenets on not so good powersupplies.

Looking at your specs, I can't see anything that would be holding back your performance which makes me think it's a software issue. Either that, or you've been unfortunate enough to receive a bum card.

Reinstall the drivers, and if that doesn't work go for a fresh install of Windows.

The card is off my friend who has only had it a month or so. Defo no problems with card as ive seen it running. He's upgraded his.

I have a new 600wat corsair psu, Windows 7 64bit wasnt install to long ago either?

Sounds like a driver/Bethesda clash.... If it happens in skyrim/FO3 but not others. Got a xonar sound card by any chance? I know some of the GX settings cause issues with Beth games.

Its a new setup, was using onboard graphics from my asus p8z68 pro gen3, ran it the same. Sluggish! Im using onboard sound?

Thanks

Get a new monitor the rez is way to low for the spec of your pc!!

The only other thing I can think of is driver issues, but 1280x1024 is way low for the spec!!

Try a different monitor and see! ;)

Could that be the problem?
Well if you're playing with V-Sync on, I wouldn't think so.

If you're sure the card was running fine in your mates PC, and it wouldn't be too much trouble, I'd give a fresh install of Windows a go.

Your mouse itself could also be the culprit. My G700 acts really weird and jittery in BF3, but works buttery smooth (as I'd expect from a mouse that cost 60 quid ) in any other game. Try popping in another mouse if you can before you try the reinstall.

Card was defo running fine. Not a dodgy card. just this thing with V-Sync making the mouse lag in the game.

annoying when you're trying to blow a Vault Officers head off :P

For BF3 turn speed and accel down to 0, use the highest DPI setting you can on the mouse and use the lowest in game mouse sensitivity you can. Worked for my G500

If his monitor is faulty then v-sync could be off! Causing faulty v-sync calls!

It really is a low rez for your setup, when rez gets that low it dumps all your graphics onto the CPU. making the 480 redundant!

I say either monitor or drivers !!

I'm going to say monitor then. It's so old now. Runs fine with v-sync off and his monitor is fine too.

I'll have to save for a monitor anyway!

Any other suggestions welcomed but it does sound like my crusty monitor! (i hope)

Sounds like classic Direct3D triple buffering / VSync lag to me. Happens on lots of games. (Half Life 2, Lost Planet 2 etc.) when using Triple Buffering in Direct3D games. The problem is that Direct3D doesn't drop out of date frames when the frame buffers are full, instead it just shows them in order and lets the GPU idle for a bit. This results in noticeable input lag. See this thread: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18360071&highlight=fps+limiter

Try one thing before spending money... install MSI Afterburner (version 2.2.0 is the newest). Use the On-Screen Display server to limit the framerate to 58. Some people use 59... I use 58 rather than 59 as it seems just a little smoother than 59... probably there is some variation in allowed FPS through the limiter. See the above thread for instructions on how to get the FPS limiter to work in MSI Afterburner.

Anyway, now try Fallout 3 with VSync enabled. Notice that MSI Afterburner will show the FPS limited to 58 FPS even though VSync would allow 60 (depending on monitor).

I would suspect that the mouse input now feels a lot less laggy. It will never feel as lag-free as with VSync disabled: VSync will impose around 8ms extra lag to each frame, on average, (up to 16ms max,) but will feel a lot better than without the limiter in place.

The drawback? A regular, but slight, skipping or hiccup is noticeable, particularly in cutscenes. The FPS limiter is only allowing 58 FPS but there are 60 monitor refreshes per second: this results in a slight skip at a rate of 2 per second (or 1 per second if limited to 59, etc.).

My personal preference is that this skipping is less annoying than the screen tearing caused by disabling VSync... the choice is yours.

Hope this helps,

Martin

Cheers martin, i'll give it ago in an hour or so. Just so strange that a moderate setup like mine struggles with vsync. :( is it a common problem?

Cheers

I forgot to uninstall the on-board Intel HD Graphics drivers, so re-done all that, and Fallout seems smoother. But i had to edit the notepad file for the common crashing problem to use 2 threads in windows 7. the menu control seems smoother though.

Skyrim menu is still a little sluggish.
