Looking a the different versions of cards that are out there i noticed most have different amounts of onboard RAM.

It seems you pay the most for say a 590 with 3gigs and the least for something with 1 gig and under. So does this mean that logically the more onboard RAM the better?

But there is only a small price difference.

Is it worth me buying the first 570? if i were to upgrade? Just seems an odd amount of onboard RAM seems to be the only one with 2.5gig, not a bad price in my opinion either.

What i am asking is, Is it Onboard RAM that makes a card better or something else?

VRAM is important to sustain consistent framerates for a graphics card. When you run out of VRAM, either TurboCache or HyperMemory would take effect, which may lead to one of the 3 following outcomes depending on games and how you play:

1) No fps drops;
2) Lag spikes;
3) Average fps severely affected.

However, typically you'll need the GPU power of more than a single GTX570 to utilize more than 1.25GB VRAM. If you are never going to do SLI of GTX570 then 1.25GB is more than enough in most cases. If you are going to do SLI of GTX570s then I do not recommend 1.25GB versions cuz you'll only fail to max out some games like Shogun 2, GTA4 etc and future games without hack, unless for 1680 res or lower.

Ironically, the EVGA HD 570 does not come with a reference cooler design, which is NOT good for back-to-back SLI.

So the more VRAM on a card the better?

When VRAM is greater than a certain threshold, i.e. the maximum VRAM usage by the games you play, at your settings, you do not gain any performance boost.

Typical VRAM usage with max settings (which requires at least 2 x GF110 chips in SLI to maintain playable framerates):

1920x1200

2560x1600

So certain settings at certain points use different amounts of VRAM. So when you don't have as much VRAM as is needed the game begins to lag, if this is the case as i understand it then that 2560MB GTX570 would be more than adequate?

I also have no interest in SLI at this time, just looking for a single card that will do the job.

If you are never going to do SLI in the future, then a single GTX570 with 1.25GB VRAM is more than adequate in most cases, because when you crank up the settings in games, the framerates would have dropped down below what you call it playable, due to the lack of GPU power first.

Large VRAM is good for SLI/CF of multi-GPU solution.

The GTX580 refurb is a nice deal, because the warranty length can already cover the gap between now and the 28nm cards.
 
Yeah, i have no idea what 28nm cards are xD Don't even know how they differ, why they are better and whether they will work on my motherboard with my processor xD
 
^^ The upcoming 28nm cards are the HD7000 series from AMD, and GTX600 series Kepler from nVidia. Most recent rumour suggests that they'll be available in volume in 2012.
