I'm intending to purchase a GTX 580 this week but wondered what the advantages of getting the 3gb model is over the 1.5gb.

I know that by looking at benchs, that their both run exactly the same.

But what is the need in the double onboard mem?

Also whats the best one to get anyway? For example on temps, noise and OC'ing quality

The best one is probablt the Asus DirectCU, but it's hard to SLI as it has a triple slot cooler.

For the memory, what monitor(s) do you have??

the 3GB is around 30 more than the normal (I THINK) so i'd say it is worth it if you plan to upgrade monitor/gt some more. Resale value on the bay might be put up a bit more aswell.

I don't want a 3 slot cooler because I would like to go SLI so the Asus is out the question.

It's about £20 difference between the most expensive 1.5gb and the palit 3gb and then about £60 between the highest 1.5 and the gainward 3gb.

I'm guessing the Palit and Gainward would both perform the same just with different noise and thermal output?

I have a 24" full HD 3D monitor at the moment. The BenQ xl2410t but I am going to get a refund and get the Asus VG236HE as i'm not a fan of this BenQ

My experience with that fan system has proved that they're not very quiet :|

I have £400 - £500 to spend on graphics card/cards
I have a current 5850 CF of 2 MSIs but I find so much instability in CF and have always been with ATI so I though i'd give Nvidia a shot and was thinking i'd sell them and get a single 580 even though its a bit of a drop in performance, its more stability.

Unless people can suggest better setups, even SLI. Please go ahead :)

3GB of vram can give smoother game play and higher FPS at very high res 2560x1600 (27"+ monitors) with AA

3GB is not needed when gaming on 24" or below monitors

I assume that 1920x1080 on a 24" is exactly the same as 1920x1080 on a 27", or do you actually need the extra vram just for a larger monitor size? I thought only the resolution effected it.

I would be looking at a 3GB card, especially given that I think I read last night Crysis 2 has 1.8GB VRAM as highly recommended. However, I can't now find the original article so perhaps it was just a rumour.

OcUK did have their 3072MB (Palit) for £420 a few weeks ago I think, might be worth waiting to see if something comes up on T.W.O?

So guys I think i'm going to sell my 3 5850s and get me a single gtx 580 3gb model then SLI in the future.

I want to stick with single card at the moment becuase ATI CF has given me nothing but grief.

So if anyone wants a cheap 5850, i'm your man :D

I've got 2 MSI Twin frozr IIs and i'll sell them at £130 each for anyone that missed the deal. They're only 1 and a bit weeks old and have had only about 10-15 hours of gaming use.

The 3rd 5850 is a sapphire and is a year and a bit old so will be selling for £100 + PP :)
Also if you do have any problems with this card when you get it I will give a full refund. It does work and has had no problems but just in case.

All 3 never OCed

*edit* not sure if this is allowed. If not, admin please remove sale part :)
