GTX 580 SLI PSU?

On the road....
I currently have a Cooler Master GX550W psu which has been a superb investment, its currently running the system in my sig with ease, no lockups whatsoever and is extremely stable, it has 44A on the 12v rail and can (according to the box) max out @660W(!)

I was going to opt for a higher output version of the same model given how impressed I've been with this but OC/UK no longer sell Cooler Master PSU's, why is this? - I bought this one from OC/UK back when they were still in Fenton!

I'm looking to SLI my existing 580 and have tried a second with this PSU - it worked just fine  - but clearly I was pushing it ,big time, arguably already am with my existing sig rig.

Whats a good one to consider? I'm assuming 850W is enough.

Thanks.

Wow! I didn't appreciate they were deemed so poor, I must have been very lucky with my GX by the sound of it, especially given it ran GTA V in SLI for about 5 hours solid and didn't feel warm afterwards!! I must have bought a Monday morning model!! :p :D

The XFX XTR850 at just under £100 sounds good, silly LED's don't appeal at all, and it's got ample pci-e power connections (I'll need 4, had to use adapters to test SLI in my existing setup)

Thanks for the reply and comprehensive list, very much appreciated mate. :)

750w? - not enough power for two 580's and an overclocked i7 from what I've read, 850 is a tad low!

I'd strongly consider scrapping this idea and just upgrading the GPU to something more modern. By the time you've spent £100 on a PSU you could have saved another £50, and bought a 960, and have more performance than two 580s, on your existing PSU, with no SLI headaches.

Excluding VRAM, two 580's are a better performance proposition than a single 960 I think, not to mention my existing PSU is going in a gaming rig I'm building for my little boy and its already being overworked by my current setup, so keeping it isn't an option.

Yes, I could go for a single card, but, I still need a new psu so getting one becomes a more expensive excercise straight away.

Tbh, I'm more than happy with my current GTX 580's performance, and, somewhat crucially,I already have another GTX 580 sat in a box waiting for the better psu to drive it. :)

Difficult to actually find comparisons between the 960 and 580!

If you're going to be buying the new PSU anyway and you have the other 580 for free then you are probably doing the right thing :)

Pretty much my thinking mate. :)

As for comparison...

Think SLI 580's walk it, plus I fancy another SLI setup anyway! :)

Have you bought the psu yet? If not OCUK has a excellent deal on the Superflower Leadex Platinum 850w for the weekend at £99.95. If you can get past the leds that's a cracking price for a top quality Platinum 850w unit.

Not yet, probably not for a couple of weeks yet due to budgets alas, that's a great price but the LED's do put me off tbh, I'll probably go with the one I initially said - I'll keep tabs on the offers though.

Thanks for the heads up though. :)

Loving this HX850 so far, silent at idle and I'm yet to hear the psu fan under load (although with SLI 580's I doubt I'll ever hear it!)

Nice piece of kit, especially for £62 via the MM!
