Hi there.
What is the recommended PSU wattage for running 2x Nvidia GeForce GTX 580 1536MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Cards?

The Ultima Tyrannosaur from Overclockers comes with a OCZ ZX 850 Gold Rated PSU as standard, but the rig also gives an option to go SLI.

So I was wondering if I took the SLI option and RAM / CPU / (GC?) overclocking, would that PSU be enough to run the system without coming under strain?

Thanks.

Ok, but is 850 watts sufficient to run the 2x 580s along with overclocked i7s and RAM etcetera.

What I want to know is, would it be considered absolutely fine to run such a rig on 850 watts? or is it strongly advised to opt for a larger PSU?

(I'm thinking of getting a 3.8GHz sandy bridge i7 over clocked to 4.6 along with these cards by the way, in case that plays a part in the decision)

Well the test system used by guru3D is a lot more power hungry than Sandybridge CPU's which consume little power for the performance they give.

Should be fine with an 850w unit. As mentioned, the latest i7 sb chips use a bit less power than the i7 9** series. Below shows figures for sli 470' v's 580's.

Its only silly things like furmark that really push the power usage up, im running overclocked 470's on an hx 850w, total system draw on a 4.2ghz i7 920, with 2 x 470's at 750/1500/1674 is 630w ono in game. Furmark on the few times i tried it was drawing 740w.

I would have said 850w would be fine. My build has a Corsair AX850 for 1 GPU but got it for future upgrades.

Glad someone else watches Linus Tech Tips - I find him pretty good, enjoyable / very tollerable consdiring he goes faster than a juiced up 2600k
