GTX 580 worth the cost?

It's looking increasingly likely that I'll be building a PC early next month.

I thought I'd settled on the 580, however, reading various posts on this forum suggests that there may be very little point of spending so much on this card?

The plan is to max out BF3 etc on full settings at 1920x1080 and too build a PC that will do so until at least the end of next year (trainee engineer in the merchant navy, will be at sea from October until Febuary-ish next year)

Would a 570 suffice until then?

Thanks in advance :)

A 570 will max out BF3 (apart from MSAA, but the Post AA is fine) and it will be playable. Won't be 60fps constant, but will be more than sufficient.

my system plays BF3 with everything on max settings except motion blur. and I get between 40-60 fps and dont notice any lag or stuttering

+ 1

I've been very happy running my 570 in bf3. The game looks great and plays smoothly on the 64 player servers.

My doubts over the 570 are mainly due to future games, personally i just don't think it would be very future proof.

There's always SLi in the future but then again 580's SLi'd would last even longer.

Decisions decisions....

Could be worth waiting for the next gen cards? I've always got my PS3 to use until then.

We're between 4-6 weeks from new gen AMD cards that are 70-80% faster than the 6970, so new cards that at circa £300(probably just under) will spank a 580gtx, will probably be about on par with 6950 xfire and at worst, will drop 6950/570/560/6970 pricing dramatically.

Hold on, get double the speed for your money pretty much in 4-6 weeks, win?

I have to agree. Now is a very bad time to buy a £200+ card such as GTX560Ti 2GB or 6950 2GB or above, as when the new gen cards arrive, their price will plummet, and the card you spend £230 on would probably drop in value to as low as £100 2nd hand in just a few weeks time.

If people MUST get a graphic card right now, it would probably be better to just grab a 6870 for £130 to use as a stop-gap, and then sell it and upgrade to next gen card when they are out. 6870's value should drop nowhere nearly as much as the GTX560Ti 2GB or the 6950 2GB.

Wait.

You say your not building NOW, so there is no point buying high end stuff just before a new series is out. Major price reductions are likely on the horizon.

My 480 is struggling to give me 120Hz in BF3 so i'm going to jump on the next gen when prices stabilise to some degree next year.

I find the best way to go is buy what you want/need/can afford WHEN you want/need/can afford it.

You can always wait for the next big thing, and you can spend forever regretting the money you waste, but what do you want to do right now?

If you're asking if the 580 is a good card then yes, worth the money? I suppose it is if you have it, but it's not the best on price/performance scale.

The GTX 580 is a brilliant card, I have one and love it to bits. Its able to max BF3 @ 1920 x 1200 for me no problems. Right, so that's the gushing endorsement out of the way...

Normally I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this great card to someone who has the money to spend, but honestly right now I wouldn't bother. Its more sensible for you to get a cheap interim card for now, or even just wait a few months. Because at that point a whole new range of cards will be available that will:

a) Make the current range obsolete in terms of top-end performance.

&

b) Also make the current range a whole lot cheaper as end-of-life product.

That's what people generally thought last time but it wasn't the case (even my prediction of 20 - 30% turned out to be a little too optimistic). I hope this time there will be a real bump in performance, though I'm not so sure atm.

580 is over priced

id either get a cheap 6950 2gb card clock to 6970 which is basically same as a 570gtx or get cheapest 570

for what you pay extra over those two cards it just isnt worth extra 100-150 quid.

580 gtx will play bf3 at about 55 fps at you res maxxed still not quite enough .for ultra really should be above sixty and 60 ish can feel a bit laggy sometimes .

so id get what mentioned or 2 6950s or 560 2gb cards . forget the 580.
