I suspect I'm providing the platform for a flame war here but if we could avoid that, it'd be great.

Looking at a used EVGA GTX670 FTW for £240. Just wondering what else is around for this money and the 7950 pops up a lot. Finding a definitive answer in reviews is difficult as its hard to see which ones are using which drivers. I keep finding reviews showing the GTX670 being considerably better in games like BF3 only to then find a flame war in the comments section about how its not true.

I tend to favour NVIDIA products for no real reason, which is why I'm leaning towards picking up the 670, but can anyone tell me honestly without any fanboyism how it compares to similarily priced AMD alternatives?

Am I buying the right card? I am particularly sensitive to noise - I don't want a card I can hear at idle and if it has noticeble coil whine in anything other than ultra high load I'd be pretty mad :p

I do like the fact that when I fit NVIDIA cards everything... just works. Which has not been my experience with Radeon products, though I've not had one for a few years.

BM's are usually old, both camps have had increases since most bm's but AMD's increases in performance have been greater.

Both do the same thing really except one has PhysX/Nvidia 3D with 2Gb, the other is generally cheaper with good game bundles and 3Gb/higher bandwidth.

Unless you can't oc by pushing a few sliders in CCC, the 670 might just be a touch quicker out the box.

In saying that if you prefer Nvidia and don't mind a used 670 and not bothered about the 2 games for the price of a new 7950, then stick with what you know best.

:)

the catalyst drivers are getting heaps better with every release, and supposedly the 7950 overclocked and with new drivers is (from a purely performance perspective) not only better value for money than the gtx 670 but also plain faster.

however that's entirely dependent on how much you intend to overclock. if you're staying at stock then for the same money 670 is a clear winner - a few nice features like adaptive vsync and physx, less heat+power consumption, and i think even with new drivers the 670 is more powerful at stock than the 7950.

there's not much in it either way... if you want an nvidia card for whatever reason (maybe the nvidiaaaaaaa logo has gotten into your head? :p) you may as well get the 670.

For a similar price (alright, £20 more), you can pick up 7970's. Which AFAIK are, in pure performance terms, similar to 680's.

It depends how much you like Physx etc that only Nvidia cards offer. is it worth the extra to you?

So is the 670 FTW I've been offered a good or a bad buy?

The reason I'm drawn to it is because I've had good experiences with EVGA cards - I bought a 570, plugged it in, it just.. worked, quickly and silently. I liked that :p

The FTW has the 680 cooler, so quieter than a stock one, and is factory overclocked, too. That said it doesn't seem like £240 represents good value given the other options you've highlighted?

I game at 1920x1080. There is absolutely no chance I will require a higher resolution than this in the medium term. But I do want to be able to play whatevre games out in the next year or so at max or near max detail levels at this resolution. This is where my 570 is looking lacking now.

One of the main limitations of the 570 now is its restricted memory. Is 2gb sufficient or is it going to be another memory limited card quite soon?

I would go for the FTW personally, I've had no end of problems with drivers on my 7970 in my second machine and it's put me right off getting another AMD card, where as the 670's in my main machine have been faultless

2gb is fine at 1440p so I would say it'll be a while before it's an issue at 1080p

+1

Tried a few 79xx cards and had problems with them all, 670 just works, smooth as a babies bottom :p

Fox I was kinda in the same boat and decided on a 7950 because of the performance and how little better the 7970 was. I was looking at the 670 but no one was praising it much.

I decided that for the price... I should get 2. So I have 1 coming today and another tomorrow.

Now I just need a 1080p monitor HA
