Right guys, im not sure if this is right or wrong but basically tonight i noticed while playing borderlands 2 and GTA 4 that my fps would be pretty solid except in GTA 4 where it differs quite dramatically depending on scenery (anywhere from a sweet 80fps to a 40fps..) that my gpu usage would hover around 60-78%... im wondering if this is normal? I haven't looked at what my cpu usage is like yet but im sure it's not a 100%. Im wondering though shouldn't my gpu be at 99% usage most of the time during gaming? I remember my old 570 paired with a phenom II 955 was at 99% usage most of the time so just confused that my 680 isn't!

I have them both overclocked, my i5 3570K is @4.5ghz and my gtx 680 is currently sitting at 1258mhz core.

Is this normal or not?

Thanks

Hi Jay (great build btw :)) Borderlands 2 is reported by a lot of users as having 'low GPU usage' I would like to think that this will be sorted on the next driver release. GTA IV was never a great port from the consoles and again, great game but GPU usage is very low.

Hopefully a newer driver will sort Borderlands 2 but I doubt we will see any improvement on GTA IV.

what drivers are you using btw?

As Greg said^^ :)

To test your GPU for throttling, try heaven as its pretty damn close to a modern game whilst not being stupid like furmark :)

Hey gregster :) thanks for the comment on the build, i was doing research while waiting for a reply and like you said others have noticed low usage in particular in SLI mode.

Not too fussed about GTA 4 now that GTA 5 is on it's way :D (should see the exciting on my face haha)

I'm using the latest drivers i think 306.23 with FXAA turned on and power management mode set to max performance.

I'll give Heaven a run now and see what i get, never looked at the usage while running heaven only the end scores.

Question: If i keep clocking my card up and down will it damage it in the long run? It's cos i've managed 1300mhz core but im always tinkering it to try and achieve higher so just wondering if i carry on.. will it damage it?

Awesome, gonna literally clock the nuts off it!

Cleeecooo do you have an i5 3570K? If so what temps are you getting at 4.5ghz underwater under load?

These are the latest WHQL drivers (Windows 7 64bit) http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/win8-win7-winvista-64bit-306.97-whql-driver-uk.html I don't think they add anything to BL2 but worth a try (you can always come back to your drivers if need be).

I am so looking forward to GTA V also and some of the screenies I have seen look superb.

As for clocking the card up and down, it will be fine. You are not smashing big volts through it, so crack on bud :)

Thanks i'll give those a shot as well then, like you said no harm in trying.

Theres meant to be a new trailer coming soon for gta 5, looking forward to see what it brings. I'm hoping it allows for modding though like gta 4 as the community for the series is massive. Can't imagine GTA without modding available to be honest.

I'm running a 3930K :D

show off! lol im jealous.
