GTX 680 or 7970?

Matt you may as well give up, you could be getting double the fps of a 680 and people would still claim the 680 is smoother. I've tried both and they felt as smooth as each other apart from games where the 7970 gets noticeably better fps than the 680, then the 7970 felt better, 144hz monitor I'm using. My opinion doesn't matter though, those 3 guys said nvidia is better so it's better right?

What drivers did they use though? That's the thing.

If it was a previous beta, quite possible they were correct.

They were using 13.2 beta 6 which were not the current at the time which is odd as they insisted on using the latest Nvidia drivers that offered 45% more performance by disabling some of the compute effects, however i used 13.2 beta 6 and they were fine. Not as slow as their results show so i definitely don't buy into their results at all.

Its just H to be honest Arthur. They have long been biased towards Nvidia. I always get a ton more fps than they show in their reviews/benchmarks.

I had to correct those H results. I couldn't live with myself if i didn't. 10 fps.

I honestly thought it was the other way around with those guys.

They cherry pick the resolution to favour AMD (which always wins above 1080p) and generally paint them in a better light.

No there sponsor is Galaxy which is a nvidia partner. The reason its usually at high resolution is because they test the max playable settings in each game which usually comes in at 1600p for the high end cards. I used to like HardOcp's reviews but lately there's been some doubts over there results. Ltmatt has pretty much proved that there TR results are way off. I think there was a thread that involved there sleeping dogs results that were also way off the mark.

Anyone with a 670 / 680 or 7950 / 7970 that actually play games would not see much difference in gameplay or smoothness at 1080p res.

I nearly got a 7970 myself but was fortunate enough to be ableto test a 7970 in my actual pc ( 3 months ago ) it did not run the games i played as well as the 670 at that time so i kept my 670.

Might be a different story now but whats the point in changing a perfectly capable card for gaming at 1920x1200.

If AMD release the 8xxx series for a reasonable amount i will be the first to buy one.

Likewise if nvidia do the unthinkable and release a 7xx card.

Another thing to consider, these benchies don't show factory OCd cards do they.

So the 680 in these are running 1006 / 1058 boost.

You could argue the 7970GE is their "factory overclock" but officially sanctioned.

Would love to see benchies of a 680 with 1085 / 1150 clocks or there abouts.

+1

51fps vs 62fps Andy as confirmed by Arthur. The gap will only widen once i move from stock. ;)

with your 7970 on a very good overclock and the 680 not, yeah well done

i managed to get on the dodgy russian site in the end - they are running the latest drivers from both sides and the latest patch of the game, so I don't see where your claim that AMD have improved another 25% since those results were posted?

Those results were at stock speeds Andy. I posted two results to compare with Arthur. The first was at stock 1050/1500 the second was with my card overclocked. 62fps was at stock compared to the 680's 51.

What Arthur said afterwards

To put it into perspective, I get 51 fps average with same settings.

With the 7970 clocked

I would get nowhere near that.

Wrong, as usual.

The AMD patch was released on the 26th that gamegpu benchmark was published on the 22nd, likely the results were gathered even earlier than that.

I must be missing something then, because the latest driver on the AMD site is 13.3 beta 3... which is the one listed in the gamegpu specs

You're definitely missing something alright Andy. ;)

A short but sweet email from AMD informs us that a patch for Tomb Raider is due tomorrow, giving a nice performance update for Radeon GPU owners - up to 25% more performance in some cases.

Crystal Dynamics is releasing a new patch this Friday, that will enhance AMD Radeons performance significantly (up to 25%).
No details on the specifics of the increase, but it sounds promising.
