GTX 680 temp query

Finally got the 680 installed and running today and have been quite shocked with the temps I'm getting. I know from experience with 480 that temps could get high but this is bothering me...

When running a favourite mmorpg I crank the fan speed upto 55% (currently using Nvidia inspector - MSI Afterburner was causing some blue screens a while back and I had to delete it) and I'm getting temps of around 78-80 degrees or so. Is that bad for this card? I'm worried as I tend to do a lot of group things within the game and if it's throwing up a bad temp (like this might be) then I'll be putting my 580 gtx back in.

If anyone has any input on this PLEASE let me know - I won't be installing MSI Afterburner again so right now Nvidia Inspector is all I have...if this temp and fan speed is ok (I was told by an OCUK techie that temps can easily reach high to mid 90's with this card and maybe higher - apparently the card is built to handle this) then great...if not then I'm stumped (I have a side panel on this Corsair Graphite white case - panel window swapped so I now have 4 side fans on it...2 are pulling air in, and the other 2 are pushing it out...maybe I should set all 4 to be exhausting?!)

The card will throttle back when it goes above 70c, which prevents it from hitting insane temps. It's not a large throttle and will not adversely affect gaming performance. The reference models tend to run hot. The only way to stay below 70c is to go with a custom cooler.

Which 680 do you have?

78-80 is completely normal for the 680. I have a reference 680 and with the fan around 65% I can keep the GPU under 70c (the small throttling limit).

The 680 I have is this (not sure if this is a reference card ot not):

Right now I've got the fan speed upto 60% and idling in the game it's around 82 degrees - maybe if I set all my side panel fans to exhaust that could help a slight ammout. But is it ok to keep the fan running at say 60% (is it safe to put it higher than that?) or is there something else I can do - I know it was mentioned to get a custom cooler, but if that's for the gtx itself I'm not sure how to get that all fitted. If it's for another case cooler of some sort then I'm fine with that :)

Advice and help appreciated so far folks.

Temps do seem a little high. I have the same card and my temps never get above 70c. The reference you and I have is a good card for cooling. What case do you have? Mine is the coolermaster 902 which is huge. I have 1 fan blowing air into the case and the rest blow out.

I have the Corsair Graphite White 600T case. As stated before I have the side panel with 4 fans on it - what I am going to do is set them all to exhaust but I'm curious to find out if the 60% fan speed setting I currently have it set to is ok or not - it's hovering around 81 degrees or so right now.

Exhaust is only really useful for a non reference card IMO. The card exhausts out the back of the case. Yours is reference.

Is your room hot?

Nah - room is nice and temperate :) Not sure what's going on now but with the fan speed still at 60% (OCUK tech I spoke to just before closing said it's fine at this speed - apparently I could even up it to 70% if I wanted to with no issue) it seems to be dropping to around the mid 50's and occasionally upping itself to around 70 degrees or so. Not tried doing a raid ingame yet so that will be the uber test :)

What temps do you get to if you leave the fan to auto?

Have you tried EVGA precision X? It's another alternative to Afterburner & I actually prefer the interface too. If you use that you ca set a custom fan profile & then maintain temps that you feel comfortable with.

If you're still not happy with it you could try reseating the cooler & applying a better thermal compound if you feel ok with that. Not sure about your warranty situation after that though...

It went to the mid 90's temp wise without adjusting the fan more than say 10% to 40% - the techie's did say that this card can handle that temp but I still wasn't happy with it.

I'll check out Precision X - do they have a guide with it for setting up custom cooling profiles?

That was when I first turned it on (with the temps in the mid 90's) but now it seems to be running ok at around temps between mid 50's and mid 70's to 80 or so degrees. Maybe I'll be ok now :)

I just need to make sure I can run the fan speed at the listed 60% ok though...done a wee bit of reading and it seems that speed is fine and I can go upto 70% or so. What speed is your fan running at for your temps?

Welcome to reference coolers temps. But sayin that, i was getting them temps on my gtx480`s on a 600T too on LOAD.

Try a fan profile with precisionx.

ON my DirectCUII TOP it idles at 25c load 50c highest ive seen it go.

Maybe you should try setting all 4 fans on the side panel to pull air in. Hot air rises so it should come out the top of the case.

If your Mobo has more than one PCIe 16 slot try putting your card in the one furthest away from the CPU and Memory.

I have no idea. I leave mine on auto. I have no probs or temp issues, so this is fine for me.

When you say you have yours on auto is that a setting within this Precison X thing? Like the other postee said - it doesn't matter too much what speed the fan is - noise wise - my Logitech headset cancels any noise out :)

Before I forget...have downloaded the Precision X tool, installed it - can someone be so kind as to tell me how to basically set a profile up please? I have looked over it and whilst it seems pretty intuative I'd appreciate some hints from the more experienced types with this application :) (NOTE* as an example...will try and setup something for this mmorpg - say it idles at the current temp, but maybe I'll up the fan speed to around 45% if it hits 60 degrees and maybe 65/70% if it goes above that).
