GTX 680 worth it or overkill?

Hey, I want to upgrade my GTX560TI and can afford the GTX680 if I wanted but spending upwards of £400 on a GFX card is a bit daunting for me even though I can afford it.

I want to play Planetside 2 on high smoothly but atm can only play on low "smoothly" and I want to future proof too.

So is the power of the GTX680 needed and worth the money?

EDIT: Most of you recommend the GTX670 for price/performance but for the same price I could get a 7970 which is similar to a GTX680.

Is the ATI 7970 the best price/performance card on the market?

EDIT 2: POV-TGT GeForce GTX 670 Charged 2048MB GDDR5 is only £259, is it too good to be true?

No amount of hardware will play it smoothly until they optimize the game, when they hopefully do you will find it more CPU taxing than anything else

So not worth getting GTX680 get GTX670, but which one? Also, while planetside isnt fully optimized yet upgrading my GTX560ti should make a difference.

Isn't the game still in beta? Probably a lot of the reason.

It is for 9 more days, so unless they have some magic patch to fix the performance it won't change much. The game only utilizes 30%~ of CPU/GPU at best no matter what hardware you have and 99% of the time is limited by the CPU.

@drhax - It might help but most the time you will be limited by your CPU, just hit alt-f in game to toggle the counter and if it says [CPU] it means you are limited by your CPU. I've played it on both my desktop (3770k @ 4.6ghz + 680) and my laptop (3610qm + 675m) and I get roughly the same performance on each even though there's a big difference in power.

I'm not trying to put you off, just saying it won't change anything at the moment. The reference MSI680 for £347 + AC3 + B2 is a pretty reasonable to be honest but the 670 is better bang for buck

I wouldn't expect a 2500k @ 4.4ghz to limit it much if anything? either way I just got an e-mail inviting me to the beta so i'm downloading it now, my 2500k is at 4.2ghz and I have a 670, will let you know the results.

Edit: Otherwise the 670 is good if you want Nvidia over the 680

Why are you recommending an AMD card for a game which has PhysX effects without even asking if he's bothered about them?

Terrible advice on the balance of things.

The 7950 is the high end sweet spot but without knowing his requirements or what monitor he has, to come in and recommend an AMD card is a bit reckless.

He is the biggest fanboy I have seen (bigger than Humbug). He was accusing anyone of having problems with AMD cards of corruption and under hand tactics.

Why anyone would go out of their way to buy an AMD card, just to return it is incomprehensible to me. Some had a couple of cards that have not worked properly but I never see him in the thread giving help and yet he says it is user error and he could get it working. So much so, he is willing to put his money where his mouth is.

I have pointed out a couple of the many threads where guys are having problems but sadly he hasn't tried to help them :(

Him and humbug are the biggest fanboys. I knew that the fist time coming here just reading a few posts. Frickin childish. Coming here makes me feel like I'm in high school again...sad
