My other half currently has an i5-2500K (stock) and a GTX 770 (2 GiB VRAM) with a 24" 1080p monitor. She wants a larger monitor but is unsure whether to go for a 1080p 27" one or spend double the money and get a 1440p 27" one. She plays fairly modern games like Diablo 3 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Would a 1440p monitor be viable without an upgrade? If not, the cost difference would obviously increase much more.

CS:GO will be fine as that runs on a potato. 27" at 1080p is too much for me, it looks a bit stretched so I'd definitely go for 1440p. You should be ok at low-mid settings with no AA, the 2GB vram will limit you a bit at 1440 but you will be able to play the games yes for sure.

If your lady doesn't mind lowering settings when needed to keep the ram below the 2 gb limit and the fps up it will just about manage 1440 with most games but really it is a 1080p card.
Can the 770 use the resolution upgrade thing? I'm running a 27" 1080p at the moment and I think it looks okay but I often use the res at 1440 as it does look nicer, If that capability is on the 770 it may be a good idea to go with a 1920 x 1080 and upscale when performance allows..

I used to have a GTX770 when I jumped from a 1680x1050 monitor to a 1440p one. The performance hit was noticeable, but if you don't mind running on a mixture of high and medium settings, Crysis 3 runs perfectly well, which shows performance can't be too bad. Texture quality settings might have to be kept sensible, i.e. not Very High or Ultra with 2GB but it'll still do OK.

Yeah it's a shame it isn't a 4 GiB version because if it was I'd tell her to go for it and then SLI later if it isn't performing well enough. It seems going SLI with two 2 GiB GTX 770s would be a bit of a waste.
