GTX 780 or 290

sounds like you already have a working GPU and you are looking for an upgarde, if it's the case, then dont buy right now, wait for polaris announcement, you might end up with a much better and brand new card at that price.
and yea 290 way better choice than 780, not only performance wise, but overall driver support overtime.
keep in mind once the new cards are out, older gen card price will drop quite a bit, what you might get 150£ today you might get for £100 in few weeks

Tricky one - the 290 is the simpler choice.

Problem with the 780 is the difference between the A1 stepping and B1 stepping cards (which can be vast - by no exaggeration there can be an upto 20% performance difference in it*) - most benchmark site numbers for the 780 generally correspond to what happens if you put a poor example of an A1 card up against an average 290 series card - while a good B1 card will often best a good 290. However it gets a bit more murky again if you throw some of the most recent games into the equation where the AMD 290s retain strong performance.

* Some of the earliest examples (which is often what reviewers have sitting on their shelf somewhere for roundups) don't even manage a 1GHz boost (around 950-980MHz) out the box while the more recent B1 cards can be boosting even as high as 1215MHz out the box though I think the average is something like 1149MHz - compared to an average of 1006MHz for A1 cards.

Wait until the new cards are out at 150 mark as at least it will drive the prices down of current gen cards if you don't want a Polaris at that price as nvidia will bring out the lower end cards later as they bring out their £300 to £500 cards first
