My friend is asking me for recommendations on a psu for his new 780 I use a 750w on mine but I don't think he has that kind of cash would

Plenty enough. My rig (in siggy) is pulling up to 320w at the wall while gaming. I can make it pull just over 400w by running IBT and Furmark both together but that's not normal usage.

You should be fine. Anything over 450watt should work fine too. I wouldn't go any lower then that though.

Would recommend atleast 550watt if its a good brand or 600watt otherwise - its a good idea to have some overhead and not work the PSU too hard.

I peak around 400watt max in games with a mild CPU/GPU overclock with the spec in sig.
