I have a 500 watt psu in my old pc im doing up for my nephew, just bought a gtx780 from a mate will this be enough ?

pc i5 3570k
1 hdd
16gb ram

so nothing fancy i was thinking of one of thos klonik core 600w if 500 watts is not enough ?

Be fine then use the Corsair
Corsair sells also standard cheap PSUs.
And seriously suspect it's one of those cheap standard stuff sold with brand image models.
With age of that PC would start to be concerned about remaining life of cheap capacitors, unless PC has never seen more than light use.

Kolink is cheap junk brand.

If it is one of the better model Corsairs probably OK with an i5 and as long as it isn't one of the top OC model 780s. With an i7 4820K and 780GHz I was easy pushing well into the low to mid 400 watt loads in gaming.

I wouldn't recommend an ageing PSU if its a lower end model or some cheap junk with a 780 they can place quite a strain on the PSU.

Why do people just assume that because it's a Corsair 500w psu it's more than enough? How about finding out which 500w model it actually is because if it's the CX500 that I expect it to be there's a very good chance that it won't be enough. The earlier CX500 up to and including the v2 only has 408w on the 12v rails. Later models only slightly improved on this by increasing to 456w on the 12v rail. Factor in the cheap and nasty internals and you are looking at a recipe for disaster. There was also a GS500 that had a 468w 12v rail but that was a rubbish line of psu's as well. The only other 500w Corsair models have been the VS500 which has just launched and the Vengeance 500w that launched last year which I have not even seen for sale in the UK so I very much doubt that it's either of those.

I had a EVGA GTX780 FTW with a overclocked i5 4670k and was hitting anything up to 422w when gaming.

Kolink 600W Bronze provides 480W on +12v and cheap internals. So no point.

EVGA 600W 80+ provides 588W on +12v but internals not much good either. £48.95 I see. You can find Corsair CX 550W Bronze (grey label with full 550W on +12v, not green label) for under £50, with 5 year warranty, if you don't want to spend more.

Thanks Danny i see someone in MM selling a psu for same sort of cash not sure if a 3 year old Silverstone PSU would be a good punt?

Warranty's expired (three years). Taking him at his word, it will be in good condition and hardly stressed, although the lack of enough cables (missing ones) make it pointless for SLI. If you actually needed 1000W it might be worth it. Otherwise, £60 will get you something good, new and with warranty.

Yup just thought 1000w would be enough to restore the OC just so the kid could get more life out of the cpu used to have its running at 4.5ghz under an H100, if i wanted to go new what sort of psu would i need if i wanted to re over clock?

Proper 550W covers that already. :)

Won't be able to pump more volts through it than a H100 can cool.
