Basically starting to get a tad annoyed with the PhysX performance.

I'm gaming at 1600p but with PhysX set to high and in an intense firefight I can drop to 30fps. The weird thing is no matter how intense, it will never go lower than 30fps. Turn around and head into the open, woomf back to 60fps! What gives?!

Drop PhysX to low and the game is fine. Now for a 780 I was expecting better.

Any tips / configs that may solve this problem?

I have heard about changing the PhysX cache?

My 660ti could hold 60fps at 1080p so i thought the 780 would hold 60fps at 1600p but I guess that is a much higher resolution.

What cpu do you have it makes a big difference in borderlands 2?

Yes I think it could be your cpu holding you back.

Borderlands 2 takes a lot of cpu there is some benchmarks here.

These are only at 1080p early level I would imagine further into the game at higher resolution the amount of cpu power needed would be a lot more.

Nope, if anything the higher the res the more gpu limited you would become. It clearly isnt a CPU issue as its PhysX based which is rendering purely done on the GPU. Plus the benchmarks shown in that link would not factor in the dips to 30fps but never below.

Intense fire fight = lots of dead bodies = lots of FPS lag.

I had the same issue with my 470 GTX so I edited the config so that bodies fade away seconds after they die. It's the only way I could run high physx.

I think its an issue with the game code TBH. I game at 1600p too & with 2 Titans & a 3930k @ 4.8 I have the same issue. GPU & CPU usage sit extremely low & I get awful FPS with physx on high. I've tried dedicating one of the cards to physx & its still the same. I gave up & just use low...

Lots of PhysX processing is still done on the CPU even when you're running GPU PhysX.

However, the issues you're having are because PhysX is poorly optimised. PhysX runs bad full stop, it just runs less bad on an nVidia GPU and this is used as a marketing tool to make it look like nVidia cards are doing much much more than they actually are compared to a CPU or non-nVidia graphics card.

True. Even with 670 SLI the Mafia 2 benchmark falls to bits with Physx on maximum.

If you have V-Sync turned on, and your graphics card cannot maintain 60fps, it will instantly drop to 30fps.

I'm not really sure why you are having problems with a 780.
I can run BL2 maxed out at 1080p with a mere 660, it does go under 60fps occasionally, but not often.

But yeah, running the game with PhysX on low sounds like it will fix all your problems..

What drivers are you guys using?

and how far into the game? I've just done 'where angels fear to tread', so about level 25 (not sure if that effects fight intensities)

I have 680 SLI and have no issues at 1080p, granted it's massive overkill but I just realised I've been playing with SLI disabled since I installed the latest drivers >.>

unless you use adaptive vsync, from the nvidia cp. which is what i always use.

and a single 780 wont always be enough at that resolution, even a 690 isnt always able to give 60 fps on everything.

Have you got a specific area to test where this happens? It's strange that it seems to be a known problem with PhysX on high, since I don't seem to have encountered it yet (although again, only at 1080p).

I get this with my 680. I can hold 60fps (capped but without vsync) most of the time, but when things get intense my fps can drop to mid-40s. Still perfectly playable, but it's annoying that a card as powerful as mine can't hold the higher frame rates.
