GTX 970 or 980?

One of my GTX 780 cards has died and I'm now thinking about getting a pair of GTX 970's or maybe a single GTX 980. The main thing putting me off at the moment are the phenomenal amount of complaints about coil whine! I have a high quality 750W Super Flower PSU which shouldn't induce coil whine.

Would the reference OcUK GTX 970 (Manli) be a wise choice and what are the chances of it whining? I also see the KFA2 Silent "Infinity Black Edition" is supposedly whine free too.

What would you guys recommend? I could even wait and see how the R9 380X turns out.

Probably wait, if the 380x is due sooner rather than later. You've already got a single 780, so it's not like you are without a gpu.

If you where to pull trigger now, would have to be 2x 970's I reckon.

Neither of those cards you mention will whine, and if they do OCUK will replace them for you. Can't ask for better than that! Personally, I don't think you can go wrong with x2 970's right now. Yes you could wait for 380x, but by the time that comes out there may be rumblings of Nvidia's next offering, and then you could say "oh I'll wait a bit longer..." and never get anything! That said, your 780 is no slouch so by all means stick with it for a bit longer until you feel really ready. :)

I guess it would really come down to how much you liked SLI, do you benefit a lot from it for it to be worth it? if so then 970's

If you don't hugely benefit from SLI consider going the 980 route and you could still add another in the future when price comes down

Thanks for the suggestions guys!

I'll continue using the 780 for now until I can make up my mind :). My partner is not liking her R9 280X at the moment so she'll be getting my 780 when I upgrade.

or just get another 2nd hand 780 ?

It was a 2nd hand GTX 780 that died on me! The one I still have is a KFA2 780 that I bought new from OcUK a while back. The other was an MSI branded 780 (used) that looks identical in every way to the KFA2 model (both blower cooler types).
