GTX 970 SLI options

Hi all

Bit of a sanity check needed... I'm currently running an MSI Twin Frozr GTX 780, which hits about 1200mhz boost. Performance is absolutely fine @1440p at the moment, but I've got a feeling that Witcher 3 etc will need more horsepower (assuming I'm running it maxed out @1440p).

A GTX 980 seems a bit pointless as a single card upgrade for me (the numbers are too small to justify the cost), but grabbing a pair of 970s looks like a sensible option while used 780s are still going for a good price. I'm a bit nervous about SLI though, as I had very mixed experiences when I tried it with 6600GTs - how good is compatibility these days? I'm playing a fairly broad range of games ATM (Transistor, Wasteland 2, Divinity Original Sin, Tomb Raider, Thief, Wolfenstein etc)...

Also, any recommendations? I'm assuming the Palit/Galax radial versions will be better for SLI, but would I be able to get away with something like the Galax EXOC or the Palit Jetstream without having to worry about throttling?

Specs are in the sig. I've removed the HDD cages from my 5550d to improve airflow and I'm running 2x 120mm and 1x 140mm in, 1x 140mm and an h100i out.

If it was me id just add another 780 at a cheap price . They can be had new now on ocuk for £200.00 so secondhand price can only get lower. Your psu is fine for two of theese as is the rest of your spec. 3gb of VRAM should be ok for a while yet at 1440.

Thanks, that's helpful. Unfortunately it doesn't actually look like the PSU's up to much any more - it's started making a grinding/buzzing noise under heavy load so I guess it's RMA time  Is it ok to mix brands when going SLI, or should I stick with MSI?
