Just after a quick bit of advice.

I sold my Gigabyte GTX 970 on an auction site when I upgraded to a 1070. The card worked perfectly O.K and the buyer has confirmed the card is working O.K but he wants to return it as it will not run in SLI with his FE card.

As I never used the card in SLI I cannot confirm if it was working but I have no reason to think there was a problem, it worked fine on single card mode.

It could be another problem like the mother board. I would try and help the guy out by taking it back but I would be out of pocket to the tune of about £25 once fees and postage are taken into account.

Do you think I am right in refusing the return?

To be honest I don't think this is something you should worry about. If he got what was advertised and the card works that's where the story ends, as far as I am concerned.

If he has confirmed the card is working fine, then why accept a return, the card works as advertised.

yep I would not give a refund in this case as the card is working fine, its not your problem he has trouble getting it to work in sli

I've read that the gigabyte 970 uses a custom PCB so doesn't play with cards with standard PCB's nicely in SLI.

I've got a 970 G1 and was looking at getting another so did a little research and found this out.
Looks like your buyer should have done his research a little better.

Nvidia's fault not his imho. I'm pretty sure this is a problem that only affects 970s and will be no mention of that on Nvidia's website which will likely say you can match different cards fine. :)

Affects more than just Gigabyte cards as well but yeah I don't see an issue with refusing a refund.

(SLI will work using an app/hack called DifferentSLIAuto)

I've ended up agreeing a refund. I really didn't want to but as soon as he opens a dispute the money gets put on hold, he has my card and I have no money! Life's to short to waste hours arguing with people via e-mail. I would rather have the card back and move on.

You have to watch out with this sort of thing, I sold a 4gb 290x on the river website and I got an e-mail from the guy who ordered it saying he has decided to cancel the order as he is worried that 4gb's wouldn't be enough for 4k so he wants to get one of the new (at the time) 8gb 290x's. I was fine with that as I hadn't even sent it yet as the cancel came within a couple of hours of him ordering it.
The next thing I know I'm getting a bill from the river for the item not being sold as advertised, Apparently when he realised he would get billed for the order cancellation he changed the reason when talking to them about it, Even though I had (and they had) a copy of the email (correspondence sent through the river website) in which he said he was returning it because he was worried 4gb's might not be enough they still put the charge on my account.
Basically I'm saying that you may be stuck with a loss if you agree to accept the return as I did when I accepted the cancellation (to help him out).

Sounds familiar!

He's offered to pay back my selling and payment fees which come to £21 although I wont hold my breath. I will only send the refund once I have the card back so in theory it should be O.K.

The guy started by asking for a return then changed it to a faulty item once he realized I did not have to accept a return.

"Hi sorry about all this, your card runs great and is in good shape although it will not run in sli alongside my current reference edition 970, I'm therefore sorry to say that I will need to return the item since there is no point in keeping if I can't get it to run in sli"

"Doesn't work or is defective
Comments
I installed the into my pc and it refused to work with my previous graphics card, I also couldn t get it to run in SLI which completely defeats the point of my purchase and means that the card is in some way defective."

Lesson learnt I guess! The guy had 0 feedback and had registered the day before but knew all the rules and buyer protection options like a pro.

I would be very carefull that you get your own card back, it might be another card that you get back, did you security mark the card?

Thanks for the heads up, I will know if it's my card so will check before refunding. Will also bench test as he had it for a couple of days.
