I need to upgrade my old 480 as it's starting to let me down!

I'm just wondering if my motherboard, or even CPU will bottleneck it though? I have an i7 2600K and the Asus P8P67 Pro which is PCIE 2.0.

Also, is the 970 best for the price range? Around £300? I want something cool, quiet and powerful which the 970 seems to be.

Thanks.

Make sure you do a BIOS update to the most recent one if you haven't already before you slot the card in, generally the older boards need this to support new cards.

Hmm, 780 looks good, although seems to get slightly lower FPS in a lot of games? Saying that, I'd rather something that didn't have coil whine!

Thanks, will do.

I've read the coil whine only affects a small number of people and can also be resolved by limiting FPS to 60? Is that true? May be worth the risk if it is just a small number of people, can always RMA it.

gibbo mentioned the return rates on that recently and it worked out at something under 1%. OCUK worked with the manufacturer and did pretty much all they can to make those card silent and for the vast majority of people they are - mine is silent, which is completely the other end of the spectrum to the 7950 it replaced.

Whilst i own a pair of 780's, i wouldnt reccomend one now. The 970 is a cooler running less power hungry card and has more ram. It will oc a bit better and hold a better resale value further down the line.

I had a similar system and upgraded to a 970, Galax black edition. Very happy with my purchase, no coil whine, and gaming at 1440p now. Do check your motherboard though, I had to upgrade to the latest bios, which put me off initially but in the end I didn't have any problems.

would only recomend a 780TI not just stock 780, but that said if there doing a no whine return policy on 970's then go for it.

its all down to luck of the draw, as it is with all cards. the 970 just as a bit of a bad name for it right now.

Luck of the draw in terms of fan noise or did you mean coil whine? I'm more wondering fan noise at the moment as I know coil whine is covered.

Thanks.

check this out

he was talking about coil whine - now you should be able to turn some fans down underload ... Gibbo has stated the strix/MSI and infinity black were the quietest of the bunch.

What's the fan noise like of the 970 KFA2 under load?

Thanks

The GALAX GeForce GTX 970 OC Silent ‘Infinity Black Edition’ is a very quiet card and rates up there with the best MSI and ASUS solutions. This is very impressive when factoring in the temperature results shown on the previous page of the review.

It says GALAX but they are the same card. Galaxy / Galax / KFA2 are all the same company and if you bought one now, chances are it would still be galax branded anyway.
