Gtx 970 upgrade - Need Advise

Hello everyone, I am thinking of upgrading my current pc set up, I built this around 3 years ago now and it is starting to struggle with the later games so have decided to start upgrading.

Current pc setup

Cpu: I5 2500k
Gpu: Gtx 580
Ram: 8GB Corsair
Psu: 650w Corsair
Mobo: Asrock z68 extreme 4 gen 3 mobo.
case: Cooler Master Storm Scout

Sorry if not specific enough, been a long time and struggle to remember each of the parts names.

So down to the questions.

1. Will the gtx 970 work fine with these components, I realise the i5 2500k is now a older cpu, however it still seems to perform very well for me. I have been told that my current 650w psu will be plenty to also run the gtx 970 but would like confirmation.

2. The gtx 580 dimensions are as followed

10.5 inches (267 mm) Length
4.376 inches (111 mm) Height

According to the gefore website the gtx 970 is the exact same dimensions

http://www.geforce.co.uk/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-...

I woiuld just like to check if I should expect any issues fitting the gtx 970 in my case, which is a cm scout storm case The gtx 580 only just managed to fit in.

Thank you

I have an i5 2500k @ 4.7GHZ, Gigabyte 970GTX G1 OC

If I told you I get over 60fps all the time ultra in Battlefield 4, you should be happy ;)

Thank you for the replies, what do you think of the EVGA version of the Gtx 970.

EVGA GeForce GTX 970 Superclocked ACX 2.0

Cheers

I might be a little biased of course but the EVGA card is fantastic :)

Please also ensure you register your GTX970/980 with us to receive your free upgrade to a 5 year warranty for extra piece of mind:

Great price on this card today at OCUK, be aware though this price will rise tomorrow at 10am so take advantage if you can!

Thanks

Hello, I have another question regarding the compatibility of the EVGA GTX 970, after all it is quite expensive so want to make sure everything will work fine.

1. Will this card fit and work perfectly fine with my motherboard which is the Asus z68 Extreme 4 gen 3.

2. And also will it fit fine with my power supply which is a Corsair 650w TX, does this have all the correct connections and cables for the 970?.

3. Is there any difference in dual slot to dual width, as for my gtx 580 specification page it says dual slot and the gtx 970 page says dual width.

So basically Im just asking for clarification that everything will be compatible with the gtx 970 and fit accordingly.

Thanks

everything will be fine and you wont regret it. although i would overclock your cpu if you haven't already. my setup is similar to yours apart from the gpu i have the msi 970 and can play all my games on ultra at 2560x1440p resolution

Careful OCUK are now spouting that if you dont own a premium gold+ rated none Corsair PSU youll get coilwhine and its the PSUs fault!

It would be nice if you do order to post back if you get whine or not, but your PSU should be fine running the card.

I read through your thread Nines and I don’t’ recall anyone from OCUK saying that, I did see them suggest that higher quality PSU’s are always preferable (but not mandatory) if you want to reduce the risk, and that many do not consider your PSU in that category. I understand you’re annoyed with your situation but that’s no excuse to make things up.

Anyway; as to not derail the thread.

As others have said, that setup will be fine for a single 970. I have the 970 Gigabyte G1 versions and are excellent, but a friend of mine swears blind on all things EVGA so I’m sure you’ll be happy if you go for that one, and going from a 580 you should get a very pleasing results.

Well the OPs PSU has bad internals, so if i get coilwhine on mine which is a bit better than im sure he will.

I dont want the OP to go through the same crap as me, specially as it takes a week for them to test the card.

Of course he could get a decent 970 and be coilwhine free.

Its a massive risk, ive never once had to think about coilwhine with any of my graphics cards but now its the main thing lol...

So tommorow is the day I will be purchasing the EVGA FTW GTX 970 edition.

So last questions and clarifications to make sure it will 100% work, after all its a big chunk of money to be spending.

1. On the gtx 580 specifications it says it is a dual slot type where as for the 970 specs it says dual width, I assume these to mean the same and simply mean dual slot for both but just making sure.

2. http://www.extreme.outervision.com/articles/psu/corsair/tx650/corsair_tx_650_5.jsp

I am fairly certain this is the psu I currently have in use with my gtx 580. Will this contain all the required cables and connectors specifically 2x 6 pin for the GTX 970 to run.

Thank you and sorry if the questions may sound novice level, but with spending this ammount of money on a upgrade I would prefer to be certain of no issues.

Thank You

My EVGA oc 970 was smaller than the palit oc 770 I had and was a breeze to fit and install.

Another problem popped up though. Because it was smaller the power cables for it where/are directly next to the side fans on my case so I had to turn Them off.
